3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 DruncanVeasey (5146) - NUNEATON, Blue Square Prem, - MAY 27, 2007
UPDATED: DEC 27, 2007 Whitefriars, Coventry. First CE beer I’ve tried anywhere but the brewery. Ominously headless murky brown pint in a plastic cup. Looks a bit like chocolate milkshake. Happily not a hint of whiskey, but plenty of roasty coffee, chocolate, earthy hop and almost red wine-like creaminess. Probably needs to be re-sampled a bit fresher to do it justice (2.8) (Re-rate) At the brewery, Xmas eve, as ’Vintage Irish Coffee’. Inky and still. Solid, well-attenuated, stout with bitter chocolate and peaty tones. Creamy and slightly charred. Tarry nose with a waft of smoke. And some coffee, of course. Would have warranted a re-sampling were there not another 10 beers on tap...

Hand pulled at the Anchor, Birmingham, during Church End Weekend. Hmmm a Stout made with whiskey???? Actually, this probably has been done before. Nice aroma, with a little alcohol spice. Looks great - black with cream head. Very super smooth - creamy mmmm. Good whiskey hint in the balanced coffee. Very good.

A very attractive dark stout - almost pitch black. The aroma is packed with chocolate and creamy coffee - like a mixture of Cadburys drinking chocolate and coffee milkshake. The flavour veers more in the chocolate direction and is just a touch less outspoken - creamy rather than bitter. Smooth but not the fullest body. Subtle it ain’t - some might even think it crude - but I’m a sucker for these brash coffee and chocolate stouts, so I loved it. Cask (handpump), Babington Arms, Derby.

Cask conditioned - handpump - Babington Arms Derby. A black beer set off perfectly with a nice whitish head as it was served in good condition. The aroma is quite thin with a little chocolate and coffee. The taste is a good mix of coffee and chocolate powder. Tastes nice but needs more body. Better than average.
