Church Key Brewing Barley in Cider Very orange pour with almost no head. What an odd scent. This is not a beer. Well I could have guessed from the name. It’s more cider than anything. I had to look it up and I guess it’s a barley wine mixed with cider. Regardless it’s really damn good. Not too sweet with just a touch of sourness.

[5124-20130210] Bottle. Apple juice aroma has a bit of kibble cereal. Clear, orange amber body with a medium-lasting foamy white head. Sweet apple crisp flavour has an underlying light malt. Medium body. Really interesting. (7/3/7/4/14) 3.5

2013-02-10. Crisp dark golden amber, small off white froth. 3+ Fruity aroma, apples and apple cider, very light character of apple must. 7+ Flavour is quite cidery (which makes sense...), fruity with some tannic acidity. 7++ Average bodied palate suits it. 3+ Quite nice. On tap@Imbibe - Looks clear burnished gold in the glass, smallish white cap doesn’t last but will lace the glass a bit. Aroma of grains and apple, some sourness and grassiness. Medium body, not as dry as you would like in a cider drink. Flavour follows aroma - light maltiness with apple cider tatse, some tartness lightly sweet in the finish - very much like a cider Shandy. Great hybrid drink but I would not drink more than one in a sitting - too sweet and acidic for me.

On tap at Volo. Pours a clear orange with average white head. Aroma is interestingly grainy malt and appley with hints of other tropical fruit. Flavour has chewy grains and sweet apple with some other less sweet fruit. More body than the average cider. Active carbonation. Interesting hybrid - certainly elements of both beer and cider.

Bottle at Rhino Winter Beer Festival, Feb. 10. Pours a slightly hazy golden-orange with a small frothy off-white head. Nice aroma of cider and beer, basically apples and sweet malt. Flavour: Cider & beer? Hmmm, yes, I like this. Average bodied. Almost oily mouthfeel. An interesting Cider, I liked it.

Deep amber. Bright sweet apple aroma. A touch of citrusy hops and a bit of light tartness. Fresh and appley.

UPDATED: FEB 12, 2013 The Rhino Winter Fest. Barrelled and taking in a substantive cider taste and aroma. Smooth mouthfeel. Light orange bodied, with some head. Not bad drinkability.

On tap, Stinking Rose. Medium to dark yellow, small head. Apple aroma, some malt sweetness as well. Taste is good an interesting - not the light tingly carbonation from a usual cider, but certainly the strong apple taste (not dry) - but mixed with the body of a nice ale. Very interesting and it works! Very drinkable, but not quenching. This is a solid beer-cider hybrid and it works. Good job again on the creativity and skill to pull it off folks.
