3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
First had this on tap at WVRST when someone said it was a scotch ale. Turns out its much more of a rauchbier. Didn’t enjoy it much then, but now that my expectations are different, here we go: 650ml bottle from the LCBO, served in a pint glass. Appearance: Dark black liquid, really fine, beige head. Lots of visible carbonation. Aroma: Smoke, pepperoni, malt, tobacco, maybe a faint hint of scotch or maybe it’s just my imagination. There’s some sweetness in the aroma, for sure. Palate: Medium bodied, fairly fizzy and smooth, slightly dryer finish, lingering aftertaste. Taste: Very sweet, nice long finish. Very smokey, but not overwhelmingly so (like most rauchbiers). The scotch flavour is really weak and mostly only comes out in the aftertaste, where it’s a bit of a pleasant surprise.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On draught. Pours very, very dark with little head. The aroma is peaty, smoky with a bit of malt, leather and vanilla. The taste is smoky-bitter, which is kind of pleasant. There is some malt sweetness here. This was interesting.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours clear and very dark with a slight head. Aroma is very strong of peat and smoke. Taste masks alcohol well and the smoke and scotch come through well.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
draught. Pours almost black, ruby when held to the light. Little to no head. Aroma is strong scotch, peaty, smoky. Taste is also dominated by the smoke and peat, backdrop of sweeter malts. Very unique, need to be in the right mood, but if you like scotch this one will please.

4 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
This one is right up my alley. Smells like an Islay single malt. Pure black with a lingering tan head. Very smoky and peated. Lingering smoke. Crisp palate but thin bodied... really its only downfall. A must drink for scotch fans.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Originally rated December 2004. Sampled at Vineyards in Ottawa. Poured a very dark red colour and had some lacing. The aromas were roasted and very intriguing. Hard to find the right scent. Some dried raisins and other fruits. Taste was smoked and bitter with a medium-full mouthfeel.

3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Church key putting more batteries into the operation. This one smells smokey and tastes like flamed leather. Black pour and roasty malts give it lots of substance. on tap at volos.
