COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Devilís Advocate begs the question: What happens when you take a ton (literally) of Pilsner malt, put it through a decoction mash, boil it up, add another 500 lbs. of Belgian candy & cane sugar, and then some of Duvelís world famous yeast? The answer: A spicy, sweet, and dangerously drinkable, Belgian Golden Strong Ale! The drink of choice to celebrate the end of a brutal winter!

Draft at Standard Market in July, $6. Brassy gold color with a thin, fizzy head. Light, slightly malty smell, with a barely noticeable alcohol nose. First taste has some cherry to it, but then itís malt forward the rest of the way. Just enough hops to keep it from tasting sugary, so it has that over many other strong beers. Cherry taste comes back midway through. Finishes with strong malts, and again only a slight alcohol presence. Enjoyable surprise.

Tap at the taproom. Clear rich golden pour with a white head. Yeast, fruit esters, apple, hint of cherry. Slick palate.

Draft. From notes. Sweet with fruity notes and a decent bit of citrus hops. Pretty good.

On tap. Rusty color, medium head decent retention. Nose is malt, dry fruit, grain. Mouth is medium bodied, muddied mess of malts, fruit, hops, and too much sugar. Didnít get ANY Belgian yeastiness I had hoped for and frankly didnít find this at all ídangerously drinkableí. Also, the ABV warmth ia apparent.

On tap at the brewery, and dispensed to fluted stemware, displaying a lightly hazed, golden color, with a presentable layer of soft white head foam, and waves of lacing that produced some additional, silky spots & strands. The aroma began with light candy sweetness, then soft malt, subtle esters as pear & apple, and light, spicy phenols. These same notes transferred to the palate with a bit more expression. Hop bitterness started out modestly, then grew to a more medium strength as the tasting progressed, offering hints of earthiness & dryness. Medium bodied, appropriate carbonation successfully conveyed the flavor notes, along with a decent alcohol presence that wasnít at all boozy. The finale possessed some peppery & dusty dryness, with a touch of back astringency, but managed to finish crisply. A flavorful, and rather potent addition to Church Streetís growing menu of fine brews.
