In centuries past, to ensure a plentiful crop, the Celts would donate a variety of malts for a community ale to please the Shony, a local water spirit. Sadly, the custom dictated that they throw it all in the ocean. Our traditional 80 Shilling Scottish-style ale is a robust brew with notes of sweet caramel and mellow roast--best enjoyed on land, not in the sea!

Pours a murky brown into Old Thumper pint glass. Nose of caramel, smoke, and raisins. I found the flavor to be a bit more complex. Get a strong flavor of salted caramel, along with a earthy flavor, raisins, vanilla and a slight sour note in the finish. It all works together nicely. A good example of a Scottish ale minus the lively carbonation. This is my fourth offering from this brewer; Helles lager, IPA, and Maibock all were good to very good. Not sure this brewery gets a fair shake in the ratings but to each their own.

Some notes of caramel, and some toffee in aroma. Dark brown color, with a tan head that fades quickly. Super sweet malt up front. Almost like candy. Very malty with some hints of chocolate of toffee. Bitterness cuts in to balance somewhat. Slightly watery mouthfeel. Average carbonation.

Mahogany pour with a thin wispy white head. Aroma is smoked malt and medicine. Taste was bland with an off taste. Total drain pour!! will never try another Church Street imitation of a beer.

12 oz bottle, cloudy reddish brown pour, not much head. Aroma of toffee, caramel. Flavor is a bit too sweet for me. Soapy. Beer is kind of thin, not much carbonation. Unfortunately, it didn’t do much for me, but I will try something else, and possibly visit the taproom if they have one.

12/28/14. 12oz bottle from the Milan Hy Vee. Thank jimmeny this is the last bottle I have from this brewery. Murky amber pour with a small khaki head that fades to a ring with minimal lacing. Caramel aroma, toffee, and that ketchup aspect I keep getting from their beers. Sweet flavor, caramel, malty, doughy, and that almost acidic ketchup kick again. These guys really need to dial in.

Aroma is malts, fruit and a hard to describe odd funk. The flavor is fruit, malts, mild/medium grain sweetness and a tart/sour finish.

Tap at the taproom. Amber pour with a small foamy head. Sweet toffee, touch of dark sour fruit. Kinda resembles a Belgian in some respects.

I have no idea what the name of this beer is all about; the label gives no clue. (I see there’s a more lengthy commercial deScription on the site, but it sure doesn’t come from the bottle.) Oh, well. Drink on. The body of this beer (as it slowly forma under a monstrous tan head) is a nearly opaque chestnut color. The aroma, as it eventually seeps through, is caramel/toffee and little else. The flavor isn’t as sweet as the aroma suggests, still caramel/toffee with a light lactic sourness left on the tongue. I’m unsure of what they’re after here, but it is drinkable.

[Bottle] Chestnut brown colored pour with a soda-like head to it. Sweet malts and a bit of barnyard in the aroma. Sticky caramel, toffee and earthy malts in the taste. Sweet finish borders on cloying. Not a big fan.
