22oz bottle (blue wax) in a tulip on my 30th. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, barrel and bourbon, some sweetness, and light vanilla notes. Flavor the same with a great bourbon presence to balance out the big beer. Thick texture. A great imperial stout.

Bottle from trade [2014 vintage, blue wax, 13.5% ABV] @ weekly tasting shared with Thompson. Opaque pitch black color, medium sized light to medium brown colored head that diminishes fairly quickly. Aroma is malts, oak, a slight hint of bourbon and quite some vanilla. Taste malts, lightly roasted malts, vanilla, oak, wood, lightly liquor. Full body, soft carbonation. Very nice beer!

2013. Pitch black and opaque with a 1.5 finger dark mocha head that quickly settles into a thin, lasting ring. The head on this beer is as dark as that of Dark Lord which I havenít seen on any other beer. Good retention for the ABV and style, slowly settling into a thin ring. Spotty lace left behind. Boozy bourbon barrel aroma thatís nicely integrated into the notes of the base beer. Lots of sweet, spicy bourbon along with toasted oak, silky vanilla bean and toasted coconut. The barrel presence really stands out but doesnít overpower everything else. Oak character is perfect with subtle toothpick along with great vanilla, coconut, marshmallow and bourbon notes but still has noticeable silky and roasted dark malt notes. Hints of fudge-y cake, bakerís chocolate, lactose, coffee bean, toffee and caramel. Very complex, inviting aroma. I spent several minutes just smelling this beer. Full bodied and slightly viscous wih a blast of boozy bourbon barrel thatís countered by sweet and roasted malt flavor. Dry burnt wood with spicy bourbon sweetness, vanilla bean and coconut along with burnt sugar, toast, oatmeal, gourmet coffee bean, toffee, caramel sweetness, flourless chocolate cake, bakerís chocolate and spicy booze. Really complex yet easy to drink. Dangerously so considering the high ABV. Subtle heat but the alcohol is very well masked with some warmth in the chest. I was a little skeptical going in but this is an excellent beer that lives up to, and possibly exceeds the hype.

Enjoyed at Freetail Bottleshare 2015... Everyone went a little crazy when they saw this... Flavor was smoky tobacco, dark malts, some vinous and oaky notes... Some chocolate... Was very good, but wasn't anything particularly noteworthy either ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2015 vintage, red wax. 5000th rating! - Pours pitch black with a smooth head. Complex aroma of roasty malts, vinous notes, oak, wood, berries, toffee, syrup, vanilla, coffee, brandy and red wine. Taste is heavy, complex and very vinous with some oak, toffee, syrup, berries, vanilla, red berries, coffee and dark chocolate. Finish is sweetish, heavy and complex with loads of flavors. Very complex slow sipper with loads of different layers. Awesome.

650 ml bottle (2015 vintage) @ Churchillís Pub & Grille, San Marcos, CA. Pours a black colour with a beige head. Aroma of dark berries, some cherry tartness, bourbon, wood and chocolate. Flavour of heavy rich dark roastiness, wood, bourbon, red wine, sweet syrupy maltiness, sherry, bread and chocolate. Full bodied. Oily and very thick. Alcohol warms. Aging would improve this I think.

65 cl bottle vintage 2015 (red vax, 14%) @ Churchill?s Pub & Grille, San Marcos. Aroma has sweet liquor tones, licorice, brandy and some bourbon. Flavour has licorice, porto, red wine, some bourbon and vanilla. Slightly fizzy palate. Porto takes over the flavour bouquet after some sips. Too sweet for me.

65 cl bottle (2015 version, red wax) @ Churchill?s Pub & Grille, San Marcos.
Pours black color with a small beige head. Chocolate and dark roasted malts on the nose, some dark berry notes on the background, faint vanilla and coffee too. Smooth creamy palate, mild red wine, faint bourbon comes out as vanilla, chocolaty flavor, somewhat spicy, distant honey notes, dark roasted malts and mild hints of sweet Madeira. Some woody tanginess on the back of the throat. Alcohol is well hidden, subtle warmth at the end. Heavy, complex and quite tasty. Excellent.
