The Last Spike refers to the ceremonial final spike driven to connect the rails of the First Intercontinental Railroad, connecting the East and West together in 1869. Cigar City Brewing Coronado Brewing Co. have teamed up 144 years later to celebrate that momentous union.

By taking from the beginnings of a California-born style of beer and incorporating an American IPA spin, we offer a more robust and hop-forward version of a California Common. This beer has moderate notes of sweet toasted bread with a caramel background that is contrasted by traditional woody notes of Northern Brewer hops, pine notes from Chinook with supplementing white grapefruit notes from Pacific Jade. Prepare your palate for a full-flavored twist to an American craft brewing tradition.

Bottled 08.21.13. Mild malt body, not hoppy as an IPA, resinous bitterness. Smooth. Unique, nothing explosive, but flavorful. Would buy again as a 6 pack for easy drinking with friends, not so much a bomber.

Bomber. Pours an amber reddish orange pour with a nice wispy slowly dissipating head. Nose is caramel with a nice well balanced hoppy malty combo. Taste is bittersweet and fruity. Finishes on bittersweet notes, dry and short. Quaff Score 7 / 10

Pours a golden orange with a beige head and malty, bready, earthy aroma. Taste is of malt, bread, biscuit caramel with some balancing hops and fruit while toasty and sweet. Nice brew for the style, very drinkable

Bottle. Clear amber pour, with a slightly off white head. Caramel malt, biscuit, notes of fruit, and citrusy hops. Pretty standard beer, nothing special.

75cl bottle pours with a crystal clear body that supports a tall tan head of foam. The aroma is a little different. It seems floral, mineral, slightly earthy dry gravel and then some earthy lemon grass and some soft faint herbal notes. The taste is soft to supple with a mix of floral hops and malt sweetened earthy lemon grass. Behind those notes a thin layer of tangerine hard candy to caramel apple like sweet fruity esters help take this toward the finish. I’m getting more bitterness with pine hops as well as some biscuit malts as it warms.

Aroma is excellent toast character with hints of pleasant sweetness, touches of broen sugar. Appearance is darkened ruby, burnished and fading to translucence towards bottom of sample. Active but controlled carb that disappates to ring with moderate legs. Flavor is well balanced sweetness referenced in nose with immediately following earthy bitterness. Minimal citrus, leans more towards darker character that burns the back of the throat rather than the front of thr palate. Sticky mouth feel lets bitter character linger and compliments (Or echoes) molasses like notes found throughout.

Bottle, dated over a month old. I hope this beer as better fresh, by now it’s unexciting. Tastes somewhat similar to a Telegraph Cailfornia Ale, which is to say nothing to write home about. I’m not a huge fan of the Califonia Common style, so maybe this just wasn’t meant to be for me. Malt prominent, hops buried too far underneath... seems like a potential freshness issue to me.

750ml bottle from Proof bottle shop. Amber pour with thin white head and strong retention. Aroma is mostly bready. Tastes are nutty, sweet malts, pine, orange. Little astringent. Not so great - certainly by CC standards.

bottle from daniel716 pours murky copper, plenty of head. pine resin based nose transfers to the mouth with additions of citrus and crackers. body is solid for the style. over all an average ipa,but I’d still lift this.

you would think with these 2 breweries working on it, it would be amazing. but no. what i get is a bland one dimensional ipa, no depth or character. hops and water. woohoo.
