COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Last Spike refers to the ceremonial final spike driven to connect the rails of the First Intercontinental Railroad, connecting the East and West together in 1869. Cigar City Brewing Coronado Brewing Co. have teamed up 144 years later to celebrate that momentous union.

By taking from the beginnings of a California-born style of beer and incorporating an American IPA spin, we offer a more robust and hop-forward version of a California Common. This beer has moderate notes of sweet toasted bread with a caramel background that is contrasted by traditional woody notes of Northern Brewer hops, pine notes from Chinook with supplementing white grapefruit notes from Pacific Jade. Prepare your palate for a full-flavored twist to an American craft brewing tradition.

Cheers!

Pours bright shiny, coppery orange with a small light beige head. Smells of biscuit, toffee, mild fruitiness, hints of citrus. Taste is bready, fruity, hints of sweet and hints of bitterness. Medium-bodied with a slick texture and soft mouth-carbonation, Cigar City/Coronado Not-So-Common-India Pale Ale finishes with a mild lingering bitterness.

Bottle. Moderate roasted and caramel for the malt, pine and grapefruit peel for the hops, light soap for the yeast, with notes of dried cherry, wood and faint solvent. Head is average size, frothy, off-white with fair lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is hazy copper. Flavor starts slightly sweet and moderately acidic, then finishes moderately acidic and bitter. Palate is medium, oily with a lively carbonation and a lightly alcoholic and dry finish. An excellent IPA, the flavor could’ve been a bit more complex but it has one of the best aromas around.

The color to this beer was perfect for a CA Common/Steam; a nice deep amber/red with a nice tan head. Head didn’t retain very long and the lacing was fairly good; however, the edges of the glass had a constant supply of bubbles that when the sun hit them sparkled an array colors (pretty cool). Aroma was muted hops and muted caramel sweetness and not much else. Taste was pretty good; think Anchor Steam mixed with Stone Levitation. Mouthfeel was crisp and light considering the style which made it refreshing for the pool side atmosphere. Enjoyable brew, but even at $6.99 I probably wouldn’t give it another try.

Bottle purchased at CCB Brewpub (bottled 8/21/13)... Poured reddish bet with a moderate egg-shell head. Nose had some woody, earthy notes with an herbal floral tone. Thick mouthfeel, nice carbonation level. Some malt sweetness with noticeable hop flavors. Not terribly bitter which was nice. I would classify this closer to an Imperial Red than IPA. Notes of vegetal/lettuce, citrus, earthy hops, wood, and a hint of caramel.

Bottled 08.21.13. Mild malt body, not hoppy as an IPA, resinous bitterness. Smooth. Unique, nothing explosive, but flavorful. Would buy again as a 6 pack for easy drinking with friends, not so much a bomber.

Tallahassee, Fl. - ABC Fine Wine & Spirits - 750 capped bottle. slightly hazy medium copper pour, thick sticky eggshell white head, nice film of lacing, Aroma has a doughy, bready aroma with some light toffee notes. Flavor is chewy with some nutty accents, a touch of pomegranate fruitiness, some light citrus bitterness, a touch of green tea, a back end of doughiness. Mouthfeel has a nice stickiness to it, A solid collaboration from two of my favorite brewers that I just happened to visit this past calendar year. .

Bottle via my FLA guy and snifter enjoyed: Pours a beautiful crimson amber hie with a mostly lasting frothy head and some sheets of lace. The aroma has noticed crystal and bready malt but there is plenty of piney and grapefruit aromatics as well. Slightly spicy and earthy too. The taste is still quite malt centered and slightly sweet except for a finishing spicy and woody bite. Seem to have a little Coronado Red Devil in it’s design. It is very drinkable and would have been more so but for tad tannic (teabaggy) aftertaste.... all that said, this is nothing like what most people would call a Cali Common in any shape or form.

75cl bottle pours with a crystal clear body that supports a tall tan head of foam. The aroma is a little different. It seems floral, mineral, slightly earthy dry gravel and then some earthy lemon grass and some soft faint herbal notes. The taste is soft to supple with a mix of floral hops and malt sweetened earthy lemon grass. Behind those notes a thin layer of tangerine hard candy to caramel apple like sweet fruity esters help take this toward the finish. I’m getting more bitterness with pine hops as well as some biscuit malts as it warms.

Bottle shared at THT. Pours clear amber. Aroma is grapefruit, tropical fruits, grassy and some yeast. Some malts. Taste is quite bitter and light sweet. Pretty decent, more like an IPA. Medium bodied.

9/25/13. 750mL bottle from Grassroots. Whoa, hansolo down there is REAL #madbro about this one. Clear copper pour with a nice khaki head that laces like crazy. Decent aroma, caramel, bready, crackers, biscuits, and toast with some earthy hops, woody, hints of citrus. Lightly sweet flavor, mostly malty, biscuits, toasty, nutty - that specific biscuity taste of Fat Tire in a way - with citrus and earthy hop character. Not bad.
