4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Catador Club. Pours a deep red brown with a tan head. Nose is light chocolate, slight berry, jammy dodgers, vinous fruit, big oak, and huge pinot noir. Flavor starts off with Pinot Noir, then goes berry and fruit, then oak and dry pinot noir on the finish. I really liked this beer, but it was more vinous than I was expecting; like pinot noir in beer form, but I don’t like Pinot Noir.

1.8 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 5/20
Bottle: Very deep brown pour, muddled & nearly opaque, topped with a beige layer of foam that quickly shapes into a thin collar. I did not care for the aroma on this. Smelled like an infected dark ale. I don’t know exactly how to describe it, but it smelled "accidentally" sour, even though it was (I mean, it was aged in Pinot Noir barrels). The base beer & the bacteria from barrel aging just do not agree with each other here. Unpleasant wine tartness mixed with vegetal notes, fruit, & a robust, underlying dark malt presence that does not blend well. Taste has jammy berries & deep malt underneath... Caramel, roasted malt, light raspberry, & vinous grapes mixing with a tartness that just feels like it doesn’t belong. Musty finish. Not for me... I tend to enjoy even the darker malted sours out there (Tart of Darkness, Tart Side of the Moon, Red Wine Guillemot, etc.), but this one just tasted... strange. Infected. Can’t describe exactly what was wrong, but yuck.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle: The aroma consists of a chocolate, caramel, sour cherry, a hint of vinegar, and a hint of wine. It pours a dark brown with a very faint orange around the edges of the glass. It has a small beige head that quickly fades to a thin ring. The flavor starts with a quick dose of cola and faint chocolate. The finish has moderate tart cherry and vinous notes. It’s medium bodied with mild carbonation.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at blind tiger with Andy and max. Pours a deep reddish brown body with no head. Aroma is sour cherry and deep sweet maple. Mouthfeel is medium and somewhat interesting - the hibiscus seems to manifest as a sort of cherry profile with additional fruits following through. Lots of dark fruit notes, molasses and sugar.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tap at the Blind Tiger. Thick black, syrupy pour. Strawberry, cherry and cough syrup aroma, slight rum/molasses. Big and sweet and unrestrained, I get a berry profile but not very specific. No hibiscus: too much other stuff going on. I like this, surprisingly, in its unabashed sweetness, but I could do with perhaps a bit more complexity.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from El Catador
Pours a solid dark brown color with a huge fluffy tan head that for its size dissipates rather quickly. Aromas of brown sugar and molasses offset with a tart non descript berry as well as a bit of a vinous vibe with a hint of vanilla and oak. There is a touch of floral in there as well. At first I thought this might smell a bit lactic, but it seems more like tart berry aromas the more I sniff at it. The flavor is rich dark sugars and bits of chocolate with a huge tart fruity and vinous flavor to counter. Hints of vanilla a bit of oak and a touch of ethanol round out the flavor nicely. Medium to thick body with a light to moderate level of carbonation and a sweet sugary but tart mouthfeel. Interesting brew for sure. The floral component is extremely subtle and I wonder whether it needed to be there at all. Nice thick fruity brew.
