It was nice to see this one on tap at Oblivion. This was a very smooth lager with JUST enough smoke. The aroma was full of charred oak and spent coffee grounds. It tasted less smoky than the scent hinted, while the rest was soft caramel and berry. Good stuff.

On tap at Oblivion. Nose is roast, ash, wood, smoke, chocolate, fruity esters. Pour is black. Flavor is similar. A touch of sweet fruitiness behind a not so hidden smoke and wood quality. I thought this was excellent.

Bottle shared at RBWG tasting. Pours a cola brown color with a small beige head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malts to the point of being burnt, peat, earthy, a splash of coffee. At times, a bit strong with the ashy char.

Bottle - Peat, smoke and char. Jet black with a thin head. Stinky cheese, the really ripe ashy skunky kind. Smokey, peaty, stinky and crazy. Love it.

Bottle. Pours clear black with a medium, frothy beige head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is roast and chocolate malt, earthy and woody hops with light smoke. Flavor is dark malt dominant with smoke and peat, earthy and woody hops with a dry finish. Medium to light body and medium carbonation.

Taster at RBWG 2014 grand tasting - thanks to the person who shared this! Very dark brown, near black color. Thin khaki head. Couple dots of lace. Nice smoke in the nose, some roast malts. That smell is amplified in the flavor. Huge big ashy smoke, and heavy roast. Maybe one of the ashiest beers Iíve ever had. Smells like an ashtray, but itís not terrible. Iím interested in this. Some dark fruit, raisin, licorice notes. Bigger body. Smooth, kind of crisp, lighter carbonation. Dry finish. Bigger bitterness. Some light alcohol warmth. drinks like maybe 9-10%. Maybe a light bite in the finish. Damn good ashy smokey schwarzbier. This appeals to me.

Pint pour of deep dark with a loose khaki head. Nose was roasted malt an ash, as to be expected. Smokey almost. Flavor was similar with roasted malt, slightly smooth, and more ash and almost smoke. Not bad, but not outta this world. Iím used to my schwarzbierís being a little smoother.

Bottle (bomber) picked up from the brewery right when released. Pours essentially black with a big creamy brown head, just looks like a creamy imperial stout. No question that there is wood in this beer. Big smokey ash wood aroma sort of like I am standing in the lumber section if Home Depot. Some light sweetness, chocolate, and roasted malt behind this but it is dominated by the wood. Good grief. Flavor is big woody ash, used cigarette butts, light roast and chocolate, and more ash. You really have to be in the mindset for this one. Medium bodied with medium carbonation and goes down easy enough. I don't think this is bad despite tasting like a burnt cigarette with some extra sweetness. I guess they hit what they were going for. Weird but not terrible. Wouldn't go for it again though.

An interesting beer that ultimately fails to satisfy. Has an umami character in the middle of a very ashy lightly chocolatey semisweet meatiness. Almost a dark fruit character. Harsh in the back of the palate. Iím sure this is an awesome beer for some palates but for me itís hard to drink a lot of.
