Mega Tasting at Bruce’s pad. Thanks to Paul for this treat. Light haze on this dark brown beer. Small pale cream coloured head. Palate is softish and slightly dry. Sweetish malts carry mild chocolate. Smooth barrel induced vanilla with mellow sweetish cognac. Dried fruits before a little spice. Pretty approachable for such a big beer.

Bottle at RBWG 2013 Grand Tasting. Pours clear auburn with a fine, beige cream head. Rich toffee aroma, some ripe fruits, bread. Big sweet flavor, lots of brown sugar, toffee, bread, mellow leafy hops, toasty bread. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Warm finish, more rich sugars, brown sugar, toffee, bread, figs. Awesome. Big and sweet but I wouldn’t say too much. Decadent.

Pours a murky brown with no head. Smell is almost all barrel. Tons of brandy, oak, toffee, chocolate, and vanilla. Mild booziness and lots of dark fruits. Flavor is super sweet, brown sugar, caramel, barrel, brandy, and vanilla. A bit of dark fruit sweetness, alcohol heat, and toast.

Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured clear dark brown color with an averagefrothy off-white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy dark chocolate, alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Moderate to heavy complex sweet flavor with a medium to heavy complex sweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a standout beer.

Bottle... This beer rocks!... Pours clear and dark brown with Longhorn-orange sparkles and a small, creamy, off-white head. The aroma delivers loads of caramel, dates and fruity cognac with an afterthought of toasted oak. Full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and medium carbonation. The flavor is a luxuriant swirl of caramel, cognac and toasted oak. Finishes caramely, sweet and sticky. Unlike the untreated version, this is not at all hot or boozy. That’s not a knock on Church on a Hill, it’s the simple truth. The Cognac barrel has taken what I considered a stellar English-style barleywine, sanded away the few rough edges and added both vinous and fruity layers of complexity. Awesome, world-class bottle of beer! Thanks go out to biggsbowler.
