Snifter at Cigar City. Chunky opaque brown-black with a nice beige head. Mild carbonation, big specialty malt tones. Almost rugged, candy sugar tones. Deep sugar soaked rim, wood, cherry notes. Not really mind blowing, tastes like a strong Belgian Red or Brown. Lacks much subtlety, way too sugar forward. Still a nice beer at heart, pleasant enough to mellow out and sip at. Has some English Barleywine and Old Ale traits. Vanilla wood.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bomber from nearby liquor store in Coral Gables. Pours murky ruby-amber, with sweet fruity aromas spilling off the nearly foamless pour right from the start. Amazingly rich smells of blueberry rolling off this thing, it’s almost more like a fruit juice than a beer, at least by the nose. Taste is initially quite bitter, too much, almost like a cranberry juice, and there is a medicinal edge that enters in on the late palate once the ABV makes itself known. Some off band-aid flavors as well. Very odd beer. Lots of burn in it, so the 10% is not only not disguised, it almost seems like it’s an undershot. Seems to mellow and even out a bit as it warms. I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt on taste, but for palate and overall, this is a bit of mess, especially based on how promisingly it started with the smell.

Maybe Im being unfair to this one because it is a bit old but I would give it the benefit of the doubt if it wasnt terrible, but it is terrible. Ok the aroma takes me back to my summer job in college when I was a maintenance guy for my town elementary school. I would have to take out the garbage which if youve ever been in a public school cafeteria is 100% a mixture of milk, italian dressing, and pizza crust. Walk out to the dumpster in early june on an unusually hot day and open the lid and you get that putrid smell that can only be described as "garbage sweet" A nasty fermented festering conglomeration of spoiled milk and garbage boiling in a parking lot dumpster. That is what this beer actually smelled like. Surprisingly i tasted it still and it didnt taste THAT bad with a nice spicy hoppiness and a rich malt bill but the finish was still garbage. Not good.

750ml bottle, can’t remember who traded this to me but thank you. Opened this one looking at the description as am Imperial Amber but agree that its an American Strong Ale...and wish I had a couple more bottle instead of just the one to see how it would do with another year or two. Dark mahogany with a generous creamy tan head that settles down. A fair amount of malt, chewy caramelized toffee, baked apples, spice and wood. Light acidity throughout, high carbonation, fairly full body, sweet with a fair amount of port, alcohol, continues on the finish with a hint of bitterness. Definitely worth trying.

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Pours a dark chestnut brown color that’s completely opaque with a 1.5 finger frothy beige head that very slowly settles into a lasting ring. Soapy lacing left behind.
Earthy hop aroma with a balance of grassy pine, citrus and tropical fruit notes. This is countered by a sweet malt presence with subtle booze. Hints of caramel, dark fruit and toffee. Smells like a subtle American barleywine.
Medium bodied with some crisp carbonation and a balance of dry, earthy hops and sweet malt notes. Not as hoppy as the nose suggests with dominant malt sweetness. There’s some dry, earthy bitterness but it becomes slightly muted by the strong malt presence. Resinous with an earthy/soily quality. Lots of sweetness from the malt profile with hints of toffee, dark fruit, cocoa and caramel. There’s also a lot of boozy sweetness with a decent amount of heat. Hops are muted so it tastes more like a boozy barleywine. Kind of underwhelming.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours an amber brown with an off white head and sweet aroma of fruits and alcohol. Taste is complex, sweet and toasty, of dried fruits, raisons, caramel, alcohol and malt with a lingering finish. A nice sipper, that takes characteristics of a barleywine.
