A tropical interpretation of a Belgian-style Dubbel. Dubbel Dare is a collaboration created by AleSmith Brewing Company and Cigar City Brewing. Keeping their local environments in mind, this dubbel was crafted implementing coconut palm sugar instead of candi sugar. Coconut palm sugar adds caramel notes to the already complex malt flavor and has a lower glycemic index than other simple sugars.

Deglet Noor dates and Black Mission figs were added during active fermentation, adding another complementing sweetness to the grist bill and tying in beautifully with the spice and fruit aromas and flavors provided by fermentation with a traditional Abbey yeast strain.

Light brown pour, fluffy head. Nose is candi sugar, raisins, more dark fruit. Taste is raisins, candi sugar, brown sugar. Soft creamy body. An excellent American interpretation.

Bomber - Not bad. Plenty of dark fruit and a little heavy on spices. A little too much carbonation for my liking as well. Not getting much of the added sugar which is nice.

Thanks to drowland for the share! Pours an amber color with a reddish hue. Strong dark fruits and caramel in the nose. Very sweet taste had raisin, date, brown sugar, toffee, Belgian yeast, and a touch of chocolate and coconut. Nice crisp feel for a dubbel, with a slight stickiness at the end.

Bottle via Hopscotch and served in my decades old Chimay Chalice: Pours a dark amber hue with some golden highlights topped by a quickly fading head and not much lace, some oily tears. The aroma is heavy on the fruit character and the alcohol, figgy and raisiny with a complex sugary ester. Moderate Belgian yeast spicy notes and even some old school oxidization as well. Bready and caramel notes expound on the nose. The taste is sweet and fruity as expected, moderate to heavy alcohol presence, underlying earthiness and cardboardy twist. Faint clove finish. The mouth feel is oily and soft outside the alcohol. Methinks this could actually age for another year or two, integrating the flavor profile even more. I nice brew, more fruity than the norm for the genre but sort of missing the classic Belgian Abbey Dubbel character, hence why I guess they just made it a Belgian Strong Ale.

750 from homer. Thanks man. Dark copper color. Nose is Belgian and dark fruit. Taste is more on the raisins and plum side. Touch of Belgian on the finish. Still not huge on the Belgians but Not bad for the style.

UPDATED: FEB 13, 2014 750ml bottle, big thanks to voodoofish65usf. Shared with beace and John, at the end of the night. Mostly clear amber red orange color, made kind of hazy by lots of dots and particles in the body. Thin bubbly off-white head, dots of lace. Good dark fruity, caramel malts, toasty aroma. Nice raisin. Moderate to bigger bitter taste, lighter spiciness. A bigger amount of bitterness than I expected, I like that. Some belgian candy sugar of course, but not too much, at no point is it ever too sweet (though maybe my palate is blown). Bigger body. Smooth, kind of crisp carbonation, lighter carbonation. Lightly slick. Very solid american style dubbel. Seems very much like something AleSmith and Cigar City would pull. Good dubbel. Pretty tasty and easy drinking. John was saying he’s getting some Tripel-ish honey notes. Interesting one to share with beace, he commented that he uses coconut palm sugar too (instead of candi sugar).

Tallahassee, Fl - Earth Fare Market - 750 ml capped bottle. Pours a still dark copper with a light off -white head. Aroma has some sweet accents with pleasant hints of dates and figs and a hint of brown sugar. Flavor profile is similar to the aroma with some of the same dates and figs and a hint of molasses thrown in there for good measure. A hint of brandy-like booziness creeps in the back end. Nice warming mouthfeel. Solid big beer.
