Draught @ CBC2013. Pours a dark brown colour with a red hue. Aroma of sweet caramel, toffee, some sourness and herbs. Flavournof caramel malts, herbs, wood and some tangy licorice notes. Full bodied, slick mouthfeel and a warming, malty, tart-ish finish. Great, especially aroma-wise.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
750mL bottle. Poured medium brown with a dense cap of smoked beige head. The aroma picked up a hefty dose of toasted fruits and fruity yeastage.. lots of sweet molasses and honey too.. more than enough sugar to hide the alcohol, but it was a bit muddled. The flavor found wisps of smoked malt over sweet molasses, darker fruits, and a touch of chocolate.. heavier on the oddly-placed Belgian yeast on the back.. sweet, mostly fruity finish. Medium-bodied with a full-ish feel on the palate.. malt-inspired tanginess helped cut through some of the sweetness on the back.. OK feel and flow. This was certainly drinkable, but was too sweet and had some conflicting elements.

3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle via Hopscotch opened to celebrate Robert Burns Day and served in my La Chouffe tulip (which is more appropriate for this beer than a thistle... read on): Pours a very deep brown hue with a touch of ruby highlights topped by an initial huge frothy off-white head and okay lace. The aroma is full of caramel and toffee, pumpernickel bread, alcohol phenol, fig, dried cherries and raisins. Some earthy minerals and a touch of smoke, char and dark chocolate. Really this smells more akin to a Abbey Dubbel than a Scotch Ale. The taste confirms this with lots of dark and dried fruit notes and even some lactic acid twang. Moderate caramel crystal sweetness along with some rustic bready notes. The finish is boozy, medicinal and some burnt Creme Brulee sugar. The mouth feel is over carbonated, a touch oily but woody dry aftertaste. I like this beer for what it is and it is a Belgian Strong Ale and not a Scotch Ale. Why Saison yeast, WHY?!?

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle at Chriso’s tasting 30/12/12. Black with caramel tones big beige head. Yeasty belgian phenolic aromas. Caramel and raisins with a slight tart finish. Not sure if this should be called a scotch ale. The fermentation character is that of a belgian strong ale.
