otakuden (1783) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - OCT 23, 2010
Deep dirty browns, his khaki foamy head recedes into a khaki collar while the middle is marked by random bubble scatterings. When I tease his murky depths, I find lace kindly left behind. Dipping my nose in for the kill, I am suddenly standing before a never-ending supply of caramel nougat truffles dusted with cinnamon powder while rich vanilla perfumes the air. Graham crackers crunch under my watchful nose and bourbon oozes out of the porous wood barrels in which they used to rest. An interesting addition, maraschino cherries flitter about the wood, bourbon, and caramel nougat truffles before one last kiss of treacle brings me into supping beervana. His body is sublimely smooth and marked by creamy sweetness. Toasted marshmallows find themselves right at home with the graham crackers and vanilla while the back of his swallow pierces with heavy caramel sweetness. As I bite into each quaff, I find his soft caramels and cinnamon dusted truffles filled with the richest of bourbons. Slivers of vanilla extract can be found as I dig through each flavorful quaff. Bourbon warms my breath and the gentle dryness of wood settles atop my tongue for that always classic interplay of palate cleansing and thirst inducing pleasures. A beer to be supped slow and at room temperature, I find that the more he warms the more his flavors melt into each other. Filled with warm fuzzies, I settle in for a slow session of beervana inspired by Cigar City Brewing.

tectactoe (1734) - Michigan, USA - DEC 10, 2013
Bottle: thanks, Mike! Liquid, mahogany body with decent clarity near the edges, topped with a light-tan head that foams up nicely & takes its time settling to a small collar. Aroma is very bourbon heavy, along with notes of prunes, dates, malty brown sugar, caramel, black licorice, wood, & a finishing note of smoke. Taste is even more bourbon forward than the aroma... Huge bourbon kick up front with a lighter backdrop of plums, sweet dates, brown sugar, toffee, caramel, oak, & the slightest hint of vanilla. Can’t believe this is only listed at 8.5% ABV. Huge bourbon presence... Maybe a little too big. Still a tasty brew, but time should treat this well.

Pours a deep brown with tan head. Nose is bourbon, wood, some smoke, alcohol, roasted grain, raisin, and sweet caramel. Flavor is dark fruits, whiskey, vanilla, wood, some charred grain, plum, raisin and caramel. The bourbon is so very smooth. Makes this beer very very enjoyable.

Bottle from JdubFL - thanks! Reddish-brown pour with an aroma of vanilla, bourbon, dark fruits and brown sugar. Flavor has maple, vanilla/wood/bourbon, chocolate, dark fruits, and assorted sweet goodies. Monster mouthfeel - this is awesome and gives Alesmith’s BA Wee Heavy a run for its money.

Wooooo #700! Draft at the brewery on Christmas day. Deep ruby pour with a white head that laces. Aroma of sweet bourbon, brown sugar, vanilla, raisins, caramel and toffee malt sweetness with a touch of smoke. Warm, caramel and brown sugar maltiness with vanilla, wood, bourbon, raisins and more dark fruits with a slight touch of chocolate. Although this was pretty fresh I didn’t find it hot at all. Maybe it’s different in bottles? Anyway I liked this a lot and I usually hate Scotch Ales.
