3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Clear winner of our horizontal tasting, thanks Tom. Big brown coloured beer. The bourbon is there and dominant, but it was well done.

4.4 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
750 mL bottle... #214/246. Courtesy of tarheels86. Pours a hazy dark brown color with not much of a head. The aroma is sublime. Caramel, toffee, leafy hops, vanilla, maple, bourbon, faint smokiness, booze and green apple. Taste is caramel, toffee, bourbon, wood, faint smoky notes, leafy hops, something faintly cheesy. Full bodied and very smooth. The regular Big Sound is a phenomenal beer but the bourbon works with this too well. This is epic. Fantastic beer.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: APR 26, 2010 4/5/2010: 750mL courtesy of ryan. Pours a muddy brown/amber with a thin yellow head that leaves spotty lace. Aroma is toffee, caramel, raisin, not too much barrel. Taste is loaded with sweet toffee, gold raisins. No complexity added from the barrel and the aging has probably done this more harm than good. Still a little boozy somehow. 7/4/7/3/13
4/25/2010:Re-rate from my own cellared bottle (27/246). Aroma is definitely bourbon- though muted- it is very soft, full of vanilla, coconut, butter. Taste is rich, well balanced, malty, raisins, prunes, chocolate. 8/4/8/4/15

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
My Bottom Line:
Deep, nearly burnt caramel joins vanilla and Medjool dates in this lovely sipper of a Barrel-Aged Scotch Ale.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam protects the dark brown with ruby highlights.
-Milk chocolate undertones add depth.
-Black bean brownies are alluded to as well.
-Alcohol warmth is present, but never loud.
-This was not one of those severely under-attenuated Cigar City ‘specials’. A thing of beauty ! It was even able to hold its own next to Alesmith’s Barrel-Aged Wee Heavy…

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Sample at the Jackie O’s Bottle Sale on 08/27/2011. This brew is a murky reddish-brown color with a thin tan head that was nearly gone by the time the glass got to me. Short strings of lacing. Aroma of peaty malt, bourbon and vanilla. Rich body with an oaky bourbon character and notes of dark malts, vanilla and figs. The finish is earthy malt and bourbon. Good all around.

Bottle at Pilsner Pete’s RBSG and then again at my house. What are the odds of getting two bourbon barrel aged Big Sounds in one week in NJ? Apparently pretty good. Pours a brownish almost black color with tan head. Nose is coffee, toffee, smoked wood, molasses and brown sugar. Taste is lightly smoked wood, toffee, vanilla, alcohol, maple brown sugar and light molasses.

3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
#750mL bottle, 2009 vintage, #5/246. Poured deep reddish-brown with a fairly short-lived beige head.. just looked alright for the style. The flavor found sweet aged caramel and molasses notes at the core, with more nutty character as it warmed up.. sweet bourbon and vanilla eventually.. grainy and sweet on the back-end, with plenty more sugars if you need ’em.. sticky-sweet with more sugars on the toffee-ee finish. Medium-plus bodied on the palate with more sugars as it progressed.. just a decently-aged bigger scotch ale paired with tasty bourbon.

Very dark murky mahogony brown with a thin tan head that dissipates to the edge.
Nose is dark malts, bourbon, wood, dark toffee, dark fruits.
Taste is dark fruits, figs, nutty, dark caramel, booze, dark malts.
Fulish bodied beer with moderate carbonation lending towards a dry boozey finish.
