| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 7, 2009 Bottle, from Spuyten Duyvil Grocery in Brooklyn. Pours deep brown, capped with a moderate-sized tan head that persists until the last sip. Rich aroma of nuts, smoke, cocoa, and a little spice. Cocoa and nuts hit the palate hard, and are joined by caramel, smoke, espresso, earth and a little tobacco. Smoke and dark chocolate hand out for a long finish. Full bodied, yet still very drinkable. Great brown ale. Palidor19 (1773), Brandon, Florida, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Sep 6, 2009 Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted nuts, light roasted malt, caramel malt, and light fruits (apple, fig). Flavor has a nice smokey/oaky edge with roasted nuts, roasted malt, smoked apple, and maybe a touch of coffee. I like the smoked aspect of this beer, very tasty! Robust palate and creamy too (however it gets slightly wearing and a little acidic as you go through the beer). Overall, a brown ale I actually enjoyed.

Pours a caramel brown with a good sized tan head and nice lacing. Aroma is nuts, caramel, toffee, light cola, and hints of vanilla and tobacco. Definitely more going on in the aroma than most browns. Flavor is mostly caramel, toffee, nut and chocolate, with a little tobacco on the finish. An easy drinking and enjoyable brown. Thanks again Dave! fredandboboflo (1404), East Setauket, New York, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Sep 6, 2009 Bottle. Aroma of roasted malt, nuts, smoky chocolate, a very sugary caramel note, maybe a hint of cedar, and an odd acidic note, might be getting some acetaldehyde as well, though I’m no brewer/expert, so I could be mistaken. Flavor seems less off than the aroma with lots of roasted malt, a bit of saltiness, lots of those nuts, but that caramel, sort of like caramel drizzle, remains an off putting sweet note. Still has an odd lingering acidity on the palate. Had some good stuff going on, but something felt off to me the whole time. Maybe I’m way off base and I just wasn’t a big fan, but then it’s 6 of one, half dozen of the other anyway. IrishBoy (2711), Bakersfield, California, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 5, 2009 Bottle shared by mfielden on BA - thanks Mark! This beer has an incredible appearance, murky dark brown with an awesome lasting tan head that leaves some foam and great lacing. Aroma is nuts, smoke, chocolate, and maybe even a hint of bretty tartness. Flavor is awesome and keeps going for awhile after you drink it. Chocolate malt, toffee, nuts, and smoke. Palate is fairly light for the ABV, adding to the drinkability. You really don’t notice the 9% at all. This is a great beer.
