COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bolita was a type of lottery popular with the working class citizens of the Ybor City district of Tampa. Bolita means, ’little ball’ but profits from the illegal (and often rigged) game were anything but little. In the 1920’s Tampa native Charlie Wall was the undisputed kingpin of the Bolita racket.

Our Bolita is a Double Northern English-style brown ale that has a complex malt forward character with notes of chocolate, toffee and hints of roasted nuts in the finish. Bolita pairs well with Baklava, Big Band Music, Cool Evenings and robust cigars.

Pours a dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted nuts, light roasted malt, caramel malt, and light fruitiness. Flavor has a nice smokey/oaky edge with roasted nuts, roasted malt, and maybe a touch of coffee. I like the smoked aspect of this beer, very tasty! Robust palate and creamy too.

18/III/13 - 75cl bottle from Domus Birrae (Rome, IT) @ home - BB: n/a - 2011 vintage or earlier (2013-254)

Clear purple to red brown beer, big frothy beige head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: cola bottle candy, citric acidity, Rodenbach like aroma, cocoa powder. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: sourish start, leather, tobacco leafs, mocha, little bitter, dark chocolate, lactobacillus. Aftertaste: hint of caramel, tobacco, pretty sour, mocha, coffee. I’m pretty sure the beer got infected, this sourness was not intentional, yet it works for me. Since I’m a sucker for Flemish Sour Red ales...

Bottle. Murky brown with a thick bubbly beige head. Aroma is nuts, chocolate, toffee, dark cherries, blackberry, spicy, coffee, skumbanan, roasted malt. Taste is near heavy sweet, medium bitter and light fat. Medium+ body, oily/syrupy texture, soft+ carbonation. Sweet all the way, but has some roasted malt bitterness to balance it a bit. Good soft warming brew.

Bottle from trade with Tricyclist. Dark brown pour, big, thick head, aroma of malt with significant chocolate notes. Flavor is sweet malt with hints of dried fruit, tobacco and chocolate. Moderately complex, slightly thick, interesting and enjoyable. Finishes with the flavors and a little tart. Alcohol is well hidden. Another nice brew from Matthew.

Rated 3/24/13. Portion of a 750ml bottle into a Hunahpu’s snifter. From notes. A: Pours a dark brown color. The head is...well, not really existent; it’s just an offwhite-shade ring. S: This has a lot of hazelnut, caramel, brown sugar, and even some chocolate. A good ’sweet’ aroma. T: There’s a good nutty flavor to start. The midtaste and finish sees a minor appearance of balancing hops, caramel qualities, and some lighter fruits. M: The body is medium, without too much sweetness or booziness. I could use a bit more creaminess, but that’s nitpicking. O: One of the better brown ales I’ve had - which is the same thing I said about Maduro, I do believe. The more I have from Cigar City, the more I think they really know what the hell they’re doing down there in Florida.

Pours brown with a small, tan head that leaves some spotty lacing. Aroma is chocolate, plum, roast, nuts. Taste follows, heavy on the chocolate, quite nutty, lots of dark fruit in the finish, minor alcohol presence, overall fairly sweet. Creamy and full-bodied with some lingering warmth.
