Bolita was a type of lottery popular with the working class citizens of the Ybor City district of Tampa. Bolita means, ílittle ballí but profits from the illegal (and often rigged) game were anything but little. In the 1920ís Tampa native Charlie Wall was the undisputed kingpin of the Bolita racket.

Our Bolita is a Double Northern English-style brown ale that has a complex malt forward character with notes of chocolate, toffee and hints of roasted nuts in the finish. Bolita pairs well with Baklava, Big Band Music, Cool Evenings and robust cigars.

Rated 3/24/13. Portion of a 750ml bottle into a Hunahpuís snifter. From notes. A: Pours a dark brown color. The head is...well, not really existent; itís just an offwhite-shade ring. S: This has a lot of hazelnut, caramel, brown sugar, and even some chocolate. A good ísweetí aroma. T: Thereís a good nutty flavor to start. The midtaste and finish sees a minor appearance of balancing hops, caramel qualities, and some lighter fruits. M: The body is medium, without too much sweetness or booziness. I could use a bit more creaminess, but thatís nitpicking. O: One of the better brown ales Iíve had - which is the same thing I said about Maduro, I do believe. The more I have from Cigar City, the more I think they really know what the hell theyíre doing down there in Florida.

From notes. 22 oz bottle shared with Doug at his humble abode on March 07. The pour is a medium brown with a big frothy light khaki colored head and a ton of lace as it slowly fizzes (oh yeah, it sounded like a soda) down to a film. There is a light bubbly collar left. The aroma is interesting. There is a ton of sweet malts and a light cocoa. There is a bit of oxidation present, and itís got a strange earthy spiciness that I donít particularly care for. The flavor is pretty on par with this. There is a very dominating sweet malt and a little bit of brown sugar and cocoa. Itís a little more bitter than the nose would let on. There is again the spiciness that I canít figure out. The mouth feel is surprisingly thicker for a brown, but that fizzy carbonation really takes some of the enjoyment away. There is a lingeringly bitter cocoa and roasty finish. All in all, this wasnít awful, but that earthy spiciness really threw me for a loop.

750 ml. bottle sampled @ Delirium Hoppy Loft. GUSHER. Bottle was quite a few years old probably. Brown, uneven mocha head. Nose is distinctly sour, sour coffee grounds, red fruits, powdery dark malts, vinegar, glue, puckering. Taste is sour coffee grounds, grainy malts, sour red fruit, vinegar, glue, rotting red grapes, sour mocha, varnish, grape jelly, spoiled lactic. Very heavy carbonation. Powdery. Age very likely aggravated these characteristics but age alone couldnít have caused them. It was very likely stored chilled for most of its lifetime. Oddly it isnít that bad really, one can almost think of it as a badly made Oud Bruin, some will probably rather like this one. I didnít expect this from Cigar City to be honest.

Pours dark brown with a red hue and a medium light brown head. Head retention is ok. AROMA: roasted malt, toffee, alcohol, caramel, chocolate, light coffee, light herbs, earthy, brown sugar, nuts, spices, peppercorn, molasses, faint citrus and light herbal hops. AFTER TASTE: toffee, malty, nuts and molasses with an oily smooth finish.

Pours mahogany with a thick dark khaki head. Aroma is dark fruity. Taste is very Belgian and very similar to Rochefort. This is decent from Cigar City.

Could be one of my favorite brews, even though browns are not my favorite style. Brown pour tan head. Flavor of rich caramel and light cocoa. Smooth mouthfeel without any bad sweetness. So rich and smooth.

On tap at New World Brewery. Reddish brown pour with thick head. Good bit of caramel in the aroma. Same with the taste - caramel, almonds, some cocoa. Creamy mouthfeel. Good stuff.

Pours a deep brown. Tastes very rich and has a bit of sweetness against a strong roast character. It's delicious but isn't how I imagine brown ales.

Caramel and toffee forward, with notes of mixed nuts, toasted malts and grains. Hints of tartness in the finish.
