3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle courtesy of Craig at Craigs doing a Chris O tasting, Edingburgh (ta for the beer Craig) Saturday 15th March Bit wishy-washy in mouth, nicely soft with a little chocolate undercurrent the spiciness and light peppery bite are fine but agree with others the aroma really suggests that this is going to be so much better. Bottle from the brewpub. Aroma of cheap BBQ rube and old bay rubbed over bakers chocolate. Taste is more chocolate and roast with the spices at the end. Medium thin body with a lingering spice finish. Hmmmmmmmmmm......

This one poured a medium brown with a beig head. Aroma was of light spoces, roast, and vegetal. Flavor was similar, vegetal and spice, but with a warming sweetness. actually solid.

2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 9/20
"Horizontal" Tasting: Cigar City Good Gourd Imperial Pumpkin Ale (GG), Cigar City Good Gourd Almighty (ALM) and Cigar City Brewpub Gourds of Thunder (GoT), via Hopscotch, thanks buddy!
APP: (GG) Muddy coppery brown, fading head, minimal lace (3). (ALM) Slightly darker, longer lasting head and better lacing (4), (GoT) Unlike the others as it is a black ale (I did not know that until I poured it), quickly fading head and almost no lace // post correction... the 2nd pour did produce some head and a touch of lacing but not enough to change the score// (2)
NOSE: (GG) The expected pumpkin pie spices readily available along with good caramel and herbal esters (8). (ALM) Boozy barrel vapours along with lots of sweet malts. Oaky and sort of leathery too. Hint of an oncoming infection, sourness and lactic acidic roams about (6). (GoT) Roast, charred wood, leather, light spices and honestly underwhelming. (5) A clear win for the more traditional Good Gourd Impy.
TASTE: (GG) Much like the aroma, the taste is quite as expected. Sweet malts, light pumpkin flesh and a good amount of spices but not too much. Light alcohol presence along with some finishing earthiness. Quite enjoyable (8). (ALM) Much like the aroma, lots of barrel influence, quite noticeable rum and oak notes. Spice are there too add roundness but it seems a tad flushed out. Does taste far better than it smells (7). (GoT) Much like the aroma it is heavy on the roast, nutty and charred character with faint spices and little to no squash notes. Some dirty earthy coffee tones as well... and just like the aroma it is underwhelming on the palate( 6). Yet another victory for the more traditional brew!
Mouth Feel The GG is just where I expected, smooth and slick, right amount of heft (4). The ALM is sharper and still oily, yeah I like this palate slightly better (5). More disappointment for the GoT, ashy and thin, minimal carbonation makes it worse (1).
OVERALL: A clear win for the straight forward Good Gourd Imperial Pumpkin Ale (15) over the rum barreled GG Almighty (14) and the distant inbred cousin Gourd of Thunder (9) which before this I would have figured would have been my favorite but alas was a huge letdown.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle shared with Chipalsa. Nose is big time raw pumpkin and squash. Light rye notes and some earthy chocolate round it out. Pour is dark almost black with a lightly off white head. Flavor is earthy squash, light spice, and some chocolate. Earthy pumpkin notes dominate this one. Not bad.
