3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 CaptainCougar (6834) - Columbia, USA - MAR 10, 2010
Bottle shared by wetherel at Woodshop 5.0 (2/20/10): Pours a hazy mahogany with a spotty-lacing off-white head. Has a sweet dark caramel and chocolate nose with a touch of black cherry tartness. Starts with good fullness and sweet dark caramel maltiness with some raisin and brown sugar complexity before a warming dark chocolatey finish. A pretty good Scotch ale, but could use more peat character.

This was really enjoyable. Dark coloured, like a thick opaque Cabernet. Smallish tan head that quickly dissipated. Wood on the nose, I wouldn’t call it strong but it is present and dominate. Very drinkable specially for the level of alcohol, which I did not detect int he flavour. More wood in the flavour but fully complimented by some vanilla and sweet malts with a bit of overly ripened fruit.

Entering old-rates.

In short: A fantastic woody, nutty, rich and creamy big brown ale of some kind. Wow!
How: Bottle 750ml.. Consumed when almost two years of age. Bottle from tytoanderso, huge thanks to my man Tyler
The look: Dark mahogany body topped by a small persistent beige head
In long: Really enjoyable barrel heavy nose that for once doesn’t smell like bourbon. Plenty of earthy oak barrels with notes of walnuts, rich caramel. Mouthfeel is exceptional, full, very creamy and velvety with plenty of very soft bubbles. Taste is sweet course with creamy fudge, walnuts & cashews, smooth caramel, vanilla, wet wood. Despite being a 10%+ BA beer (and a CCB) this beer is anything but aggressive, it is in fact incredibly smooth. All the flavors coexist peacefully and there is no alcohol presence at all. If only the wood could dry out the beer a bit more this would be a masterpiece as only the apparent sweetness prevents me from giving it a masterpiece score. My favorite CCB so far and by far, and it is actually my first and only “wow!” beer CCB. I conclude most of my CCB ratings by saying that this brewery is overrated but today is different, I’m simply incapable of being cynical right now because this fantastic beer has put me in a wonderful mood. Rainbows are pretty.

Huge thanks to daknole as usual! Bottle #82/204 pours red-brown with an off-white head. Aroma shows notes of brown sugar, delhi dates, cocoa powder, hazelnut, bourbon, and vanilla. Flavor shows the same with additional notes of oak, light smoke, roasted malt, and a hint of molasses. Overall body is moderate to full, sweet, and finishes with some nice warming alcohol.

Bottle 82/204 generously shared by Dak...WOW!!! Murky burnt chestnut with shades of crimson, garnet, and tangerine straight from Sedona’s Oak Creek. Thin eggshell head. Aroma shows tons of caramel, toffee, brown sugar, toasted nuts, and a bit of bourbon. Flavor has notes of vanilla, oak, dark fruit, smoke and chocolate. Still a bit of alcohol but it isn’t distracting. Additionally, this brew is quite sweet but isn’t at all cloying. Glad I had an opportunity to try this one!!!

Smells like sweet malts, almost more brown ale than scotch ale. The beer pours dark brown with a small off white head. The flavor is scotch ale and brown ale blended perfectly, both styles coming out to shine well on a nice body.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Thorpe429 (3824) - Alexandria, Virginia, USA - APR 21, 2011
Bottle shared by bmanning--#24/204. Served in a snifter.
Pours a medium brown color and is actually quite hazy. Really thin tan head, though it’s fairly persistent with a touch of lacing. The nose is really quite nice with a lot of caramel, toffee, and dark fruits. There is a tad bit of bourbon in the background, though not all that much and it really melds in with the other components. As it warms, even more dark fruits make an appearance.
The taste isn’t quite as integrated and the sweetness takes over a bit more. There is still a fairly-strong toffee presence with some dates, though it’s not as fruity as the nose. I really can’t pick out all that much bourbon. The body is medium and is really quite smooth. The alcohol is not really present at all. Even though it was a bit sweet, I found this to be quite drinkable. Thanks again, Ben.
