Rurik: the founder of the dynasty that bears his name which ruled Kievan Rus and later Muscovy until the 16th century. This land would later spawn the Muscovy Trading Company and become a base of trade between Russia and Britain. Two styles of beer comprise this blend, old ale and imperial stout. Both are of British origin with the later made famous by its exportation to the Russian Court. Rurik is the second beer in the Campeador series, a barrel-aged collaboration between Knightly Spirits and Cigar City Brewing. Limited release of 204 bottles.

2010 Vintage ~ Bottle 183/204

12/01/2010: Cigar City Campeador Rurik Ale 2010... Aroma: Chocolate and red wine. Appearance: Flows like an explosive geyser once the cap is removed... there is brown foam everywhere! Pours a deep, dark brown color and has a huge, long-lasting, foamy brown head. Flavor: Interesting and good flavor - toasted malts, dark chocolate; berries and red wine in the middle followed by a nice finish of mild coffee, semi-sweet chocolate; moderately sweet, yet a bit dry overall. Palate: Medium-bodied with lots of carbonation. Overall: Not too bad even though it seems to be infected...

Pours dark with a thick creamy foam head that laces my glass. The aroma is of dark fruit, mild vanilla, subtle roasted malts, booze, and a moderate intensity of carmel sweet malts. In the flavor I picked up on an unbalanced taste between the sweetness and the bitterness. I noticed sweet carmelized malts with an overwhelming bitter blend of booze and roasted dark malts. There was a subtle acidic fruity flavor that seems to put a wedge between the sweet and bitter taste but it came off as rather odd. Overall I enjoyed this brew and I’m glad the after taste does not linger much to make this a more drinkable brew.

750mL bottle, #97/204. Poured near black with a very tall dark tan head. The aroma picked up sour oak, whiskey, and funky notes with a bit of cherry and licorice too.. some vanilla, chocolate, and coffee backing.. seemed a bit of the sour side. The flavor found sour plums, licorice, and coffee on the roasty middle with tangy oak, cherry skins, and funky Brett-like notes around.. finished sour and roasty with a hit of cherry skins. Medium-plus bodied with low carbonation on the palate.. OK feel and flow, but a bit too sour.

Bomber shared by Steve, thanks! Pours a dark brown with a medium tan head. Nose is dark fruit, malt. Flavor is caramel, roast, dark fruits. Highly carbonated, which is strange and surprising. Reminded me some of BCBS, but certainly not as good overall.

Thanks Dchmela! You are such a pal!! Pours a soft black with big mocha head. This is all booze and malts, which is an awesome thing. Aromas of burnt caramel, burnt sugar, vinous, brandy, coffee, marshmallow. Flavours are sweet with some toasty sugars, warm booze. Fantastic beer.

Bottle during RBWG 2013. Dark brown pour with a small tan head. Rich BA aroma, raisins, coconut, fudge, caramel, and more - perhaps a touch of oxidation and apples. Tasty flavor that parallels. Glad to try it!
