COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Rurik: the founder of the dynasty that bears his name which ruled Kievan Rus and later Muscovy until the 16th century. This land would later spawn the Muscovy Trading Company and become a base of trade between Russia and Britain. Two styles of beer comprise this blend, old ale and imperial stout. Both are of British origin with the later made famous by its exportation to the Russian Court. Rurik is the second beer in the Campeador series, a barrel-aged collaboration between Knightly Spirits and Cigar City Brewing. Limited release of 204 bottles.

#138. Dark brown with little head. Vinous aroma with some cherry charred wood and chocolate. Lots to this one, yeast, fruit, chocolate, very malty. Feels kind of light in the mouth, though. Which is actually kind of nice to not have such a complex AND heavy beer.

Thanks to Degarth for the share. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Nose is chocolate, malt, some earthiness, roast/ char, molasses, and dark cherry. There is a sligh hint of infection, but it does not really detract overall. Flavor is similar with subtle bourbon, chocolate, some wood, and cherry. Medium- to full-bodied and very good overall.

Bottle. Near black body with reddish highlights and a thin tan head. Malty nose with big notes of unripened fruit (mostly raisin), bourbon, and oak, lighter notes of toffee and vanilla. Full body with a slightly oily texture and soft carbonation. Flavor is sweet and boozy, lots of dark fruit up front, raisin and plum, mid way through I get some roasty malt and some sweet molasses and brown sugar. Also present were some mild smokey notes and some dark cocoa. Finished slightly dry and vinuous. Good. These notes were taken very shortly after the bottle release, no signs of infection were observed at the time however, I have recently opened another bottle and mild infection was present.

Bottle number 3 of 204 from 2010 thanks to cquiroga. Pours with a black body and a tan head. Aroma is lactic, vinous, infection, berries, toffee, bourbon and woody. Taste is earthy, ashes, metallic, toffee, vinous, wood, brown sugar. Creamy mouthfeel, with light bubbles. Not bad for an infected beer.

Bottle 27 of 204 thanks to ditmier for sharing this. Pours out black topped with a cream tan head. Aroma was of sweet pit fruit, brown sugar, vanilla, and rich malts. Taste was more of the sweetness milk chocolate, brown sugar, vanilla, oak, caramel, toffee, and some light coffee.

Bottle number 164. Pours a watery, opaque brown/black with a very frothy, tan head. Nose is grainy, bready, a touch of funk, a little fruit, some coffee grounds. Flavor is sweet, chocolate, roasted malts, a little acid, smoke, coffee. Full bodied, acidic finish. A little weird.

bottle number 167 thanks to Cheeseman! You rule! Pours opaque black with a medium tan head. Aroma is all over the place. Complex as hell, obvious apple brandy, wet wood, fruity yeast, coffee and cocoa nibs. Flavor is semi-sweet red berries with a strong barrel presence and lingering coffee in the finish. Silky smooth mouth-feel. Really tons going on here, but everything complements and there are no dominate flavors overpowering the next. Kudos Cigar City!

750. Thanks alan and clint. Pours black with a dense creamy buff colored disc of head. Would have thought it was an impy. Nutty, musty, slightly basementy nose. Kind of cola and nutshell qualities. Creamy medium body, soft carb. Cola, chocolate, nuts, and a little bit of black olive on the mid palate. Long nutty finish.

Thanks SoLan! Maybe this is a touch infected but the brett character added to the experience. great chocolate notes, creamy body, splendid dark rich goodness. Hopefully the crew left more in the bottle for me to drink.
