COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We salute Don Gavino with this tart guava ale, aged in chardonnay barrels to create a balance between the sweetness of the base beer and fruit with the tartness of the lactic fermentation.

Pours a slightly murky orange amber color with a pillowy eggshell foam. There are lots of parts to this beer that i like... bright juicy guava, mango and layers of buttery chardonnay character... toasted oak, vanilla a touch of minerality but the honeyed malt sweetness adds a layer that detracts from the good and confuses the palate into a questionable final product with even slight touches of aspirin and metal.

Ah, so this is what Cigar City’s about....It’s funny, a guy I met while waiting in line who didn’t seem to know too much about the beer scene but was from Florida was very excited to hit up Due South’s beers. I asked, well, are you excited for Cigar City?? In a very unenthusiastic tone he said, Oh, Cigar City, ya, theyre ok, I guess, if you like that sort of thing. If you like big, flavored, intense beers, theyre ok, but if you want better, non-novelty beers, I would pass. And though I didnt take his advice, I definitely should have. Thankfully, the line wasnt too long, so I didnt really waste too much of my time.
Honestly, the beer was fine, not overly sweet or anything and certainly no flaws or overt alcohol, but I’ll be damned if I could taste anything other than Chardonnay, barrel tannin and guava juice...Fine carbonation and a decent texture, just very light on the sourness. It’s there, for sure, adding light lactic and brett notes, but it’s just much too relegated to the background while the mouthfull of chardonnay only gives way to a big finish of guava.

UPDATED: MAR 31, 2014 A sweeter finish would’ve been nice. Otherwise not bad. Aroma has some musty dankness to it. Flavor is tart but no sweetness to balance.

Hazy gold/yellow pour, big white head. Guava, chardonnay, lemons, limes, mango notes, sour and awesome.

Bottle from Hunahpu Day in Tampa. Pours a golden elixir with a thin white head that rimmed nicely. Some sporadic lacing in the snifters. The nose had guava, mango, light citrus, funk, cereal, and wine barrel. Taste similar was light, dry, full of tropical fruits, and wine barrel. Loved the mild funk and tartness. Dry finish. Light body, medium to heavy carbonation.

HMOG 2014. Loved the nose on this one. Big tropical mixed fruits, guava, mango, sweet, funk. Taste was mild tart, guava, white wine, oak, tropical notes. Lovely. One of the highlights of the day for me.

Pours a hazy apricot with a pale golden-tan head. Malty aroma has a firm overtone of tart guava - and a bit of the chardonnay. Guava dominates the flavor, sweet and tart, allowing a little malt through. Texture is firm and smooth, if not too fizzy, leaving a tart fruity finish.

750 ml bottle acquired via trade with afterglow. Thanks. Been fairly excited for this one. Pours a deep copper reddish hue, decent haze and dulled hues through the middle as some fall orange reddish glow hits the edges and bottom. A big cakey tannish head stays sizable, sticks around and laces well. A good cakey layer remains, the colors are darker, gently hazed, and pleasing. Aromas are tart guava, citrusy sourness, a bit lemony with wet wood, white wine, gentle spiciness. A firm yogurty feel blends with that fruity and citrusy guava, some gentle spiciness, gentle fruity white wine shows white grape, some melon, gentle tangerine. Lovely stuff, more gentle with touches of florals, hibiscus and more lactic acidity as it settles in. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied showing some sweet fruit, tart guava, lactic acidity and yogurt. Gentle white wine barrel shows some oak, subtle melon and citrus, mellow honeysuckle. A bit more tart and acidic into the middle, more lemon, gentle guava, bready malts and yogurt hit a bit more. The backend is tart, a bit lighter and slick as the sourness meets it’s peak, blending well with a touch of tannic white wine and warmth. Some bready malt, touch of sweetness and lingering sourness, white wine. The nose really delivers as it settles in, the barrel component adds some complexity with a fairly potent fruity and sour nose. The beer itself comes in waves, tart and a bit acidic at times, a bit tame and sweet at others, almost a touch of cookie/graham cracker feel at times and some weird soapiness faintly sometimes. It works at times quite nicely, it becomes a bit forgetable at others. A solid offering with a potent nose and a really nice middle. The barrel certainly is interesting and overall, I’d say this is more complex than straight Lacto Guava Grove. The finish grows a bit in sourness but also bitterness as we get further in. It’s lighter nature, more sour and fruity feel make it a bit dangerously drinkable.

Bottle thanks to Jeff, Tony, Kevin, and Mike for sharing. Pours hazy gold with a medium sized fizzy head that fades quickly to a thin ring. Aromas are musty grass, peppery yeast, sour funky citrus, and wood. Taste is decent but kinda boring. Mostly sour citrusy flavors which must be the guava. Some grass and wood too. Dry white wine finish. Not bad but not really my thing.
