COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We salute Don Gavino with this tart guava ale, aged in chardonnay barrels to create a balance between the sweetness of the base beer and fruit with the tartness of the lactic fermentation.

Pour at WTF poured a clear golden amber with a lasting ivory head. Aromas of straw, citrus, barnyard funk and light earthiness. Palate was light bodied and crisp with a dry lightly tart finish. Flavors of straw, barnyard and light citrus with a crisp dry lightly tart lingering funky finish.

Bottle. Murky orange pour, with an off white head. Muddled fruit, sweetness, moderate guava flavor, mineral character, old bread, and white grape. Not really "sour" and not really good.

CC Don Gavinos Big Guava. Near medium body with high carbonation which produces a large and durable head. Slightly funky, very fruity aroma and flavor. Guava is noticeable. Mildly bitter and funky aftertaste. Lightly tart. Quality deteriorated with warming: Serve cold.

750ml bottle shared thanks to Lukaduke! Pours cloudy toasted orange with 2 finger head. Nose is musty overripe fruit, some faint medicinal cherry and malty grain. Taste is chalky tropcical fruit, neca wafers, sweet tarts, aspirin. Finish is dusty artificial tropical fruit. Strange...

Lukaduke (2908) - Gray, Maine, USA - APR 6, 2014
Pours a slightly murky orange amber color with a pillowy eggshell foam. There are lots of parts to this beer that i like... bright juicy guava, mango and layers of buttery chardonnay character... toasted oak, vanilla a touch of minerality but the honeyed malt sweetness adds a layer that detracts from the good and confuses the palate into a questionable final product with even slight touches of aspirin and metal.

Ah, so this is what Cigar Cityís about....Itís funny, a guy I met while waiting in line who didnít seem to know too much about the beer scene but was from Florida was very excited to hit up Due Southís beers. I asked, well, are you excited for Cigar City?? In a very unenthusiastic tone he said, Oh, Cigar City, ya, theyre ok, I guess, if you like that sort of thing. If you like big, flavored, intense beers, theyre ok, but if you want better, non-novelty beers, I would pass. And though I didnt take his advice, I definitely should have. Thankfully, the line wasnt too long, so I didnt really waste too much of my time.
Honestly, the beer was fine, not overly sweet or anything and certainly no flaws or overt alcohol, but Iíll be damned if I could taste anything other than Chardonnay, barrel tannin and guava juice...Fine carbonation and a decent texture, just very light on the sourness. Itís there, for sure, adding light lactic and brett notes, but itís just much too relegated to the background while the mouthfull of chardonnay only gives way to a big finish of guava.
