We salute Don Gavino with this tart guava ale, aged in chardonnay barrels to create a balance between the sweetness of the base beer and fruit with the tartness of the lactic fermentation.

Bottle: The aroma consists of tart guava, lemon, and some light white wine. It pours a hazy dull orange with a two finger off-white head that quickly fades to a thin film outlined by a slightly thicker ring. The flavor starts with with moderate tart guava and citrus. The finish has some light-moderate lemon with some faint white wine notes. It’s light-medium bodied with lively carbonation. Overall, really tasty and super refreshing. The cartoons a tad prickly though.

Kentucky Fried Charleston Trip Beer #87. Draft at Brewvival. Pours a hazy amber color with a thin white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of guava, spice, stone fruits, mild white wine. Faintly tannic. The taste is guava, earth, spice, cactus. Medium bodied, lingering tartness.

Bottle. Pours a hazy dark gold with lots of white lacing and billowing white head. Aroma is extremely tart fruits. Taste is tons of dry oak/wood, seems almost malty. Getting the dryness of the chardonnay but no guava or tartness :(

Draft at blind tiger with max and Andy. Pours a deep murky orange with thin tightly bubbled white lacing. Aroma is sharp sour character and nice fruity guava flavor. Mouthfeel is zippy and tart with notes of sour guava, tart fruits and light vinegar.

Poured from a bomber into a tulip. Murky orange brown color with strong dense head. A very effervescent mouthfeel and strong carbonation. This is less a sour beer than a tart beer, though the guava does come through. However, it finishes with a weird bitterness that kept me from enjoying this fully. While I'm glad I tried this, I find the regular guava grove to be better. It's more sour, more fruity, and has a better mouthfeel. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Nice hazy, golden and red pour. Once this baby warms up the guava and Chardonnay barrels really shine, even has a nice mellow funk aroma. The guava, acidity from the barrel and the overall sweetness seem to battle each other. I think this is a pretty damn interesting brew and I wish I would’ve grabbed a few more while I was at the brewery on top of my el catador allotment

Hazy golden pour with a white head. Aromas of guava, funky yeast, wine, oak, and some sourness. Flavor is tart guavas upfront with some nice oaked chardonnay character in the finish. Easy to drink and refreshing. Very complex and well done!

My Bottom Line:
Guava fruitiness, earthy yeast and finishing tartness are all brought together by soft effervescence before oak seals each sip.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the cloudy amber.
-The relative leanness of the body (for Cigar City) and quenching tartness make this beer quite personable.
-All flavors feel equal in here; none try to dominate.
-The guava character is pleasantly blended into the rest of the beer. It could have passed as a tropical hop and yeast blend. The same could not be said about the Peach IPA, for example, which felt artificial on that front.

Bottle @ Steve’s Super Bowl party. Thanks homer! Pours a murky dark orange appearance with a fizzy, off white head. Definitely some white wine in the nose with some pineapple and acidic tropical fruits. Guava comes through in the flavor which elicits a touch of stomach acid. Finishes quite dry and moderately tart. I fairly enjoyed it but wasn’t blown away. Others at the party liked this better.

Pour out of 750 mL bottle, hazy red pour with white head, aroma brought notes of nice guava, vanilla, some lemon, biscuit, bread, hints of white fruit with peach, pear, touch of white grape, finishing sweet. Taste is a mix of nice peach, pear, guava, grape into a bit of oak, slight earth, finishing slightly tart, slightly fruity. Tasty.
