Hazy golden color with no head; lost almost half the bottle due to a massive gush. coriander, orange peel, toffee aromas. medium bodied with soft co2. Tasty ginger, coriander, orange peel, toasted caramel flavors--nice use of the spice rack here

Bottle 75 cl. Lightly hazy orangey golden with a white head. Weird buttery nose with a light citrusy whiff. Comes as an extreme gusher, medium-bodied, yeasty, spicy, lightly tart, ends dry and bitter. Strangely underwhelming this version. 280712

Westmeister (938) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - AUG 2, 2012
Big gusher and lost about a 1/4 of the bottle. No real movement of the bottle before opening so no idea. Poured a cloudy orange with super tight bubbled. Smell was Funky yeast, spice, citrus and some wood. Taste was spice, Cedar Wood, pepper, citrus, orange peel. Quite dry finish. Besides the gushing this was a hell of a beer.

Sampled at EBF. Grapefruit is normally a fruit I expect to find in a good IPA, and this was sort of similar to that. The grapefruit really reminded me of an IPA but with the flavor/taste of a saison. Interesting but not my favorite of the bunch.

jstraw (1655) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JUL 27, 2012
Hazy orange with big, fizzy & foamy white head / Delicate, tart nose of brett, candy, and orchard fruit / Medium to full body, tart, aggressive fine-bubbled carbonation, somewhat sweet and syrupy underneath, but with good hop balance and moderately bitter finish / Complex flavors of passion fruit, pineapple, banana, orange, apple, smoke, clove, coriander, straw, horse blanket, manure, and grapefruit wood (presumably) / A tiny bit overly sweet and syrupy for my taste, with carbonation problems, but still a great brew, and significantly better than the lemon wood version by my notes.

Appearance: liquid sunshine. Grapefruit yellow and gold. Bubbly vibrant white head leaves a collar while very active carbonation sends a slow and steady stream of bubbles to the top.
Nose: grapefruit and soft leather – chamois. Apricot skins. Wild tropical fruits in the raw – guava, papaya, and starfruit – all basking under the warm summer sun. Raw ginger root.
Palate: freshly squeezed and pulped white and yellow grapefruit. Apricots. Fizzy frothy mouthfeel thanks to the still active yeasts bubbling and fermenting away – gives an ethereal quality to the beer altogether. Ginger and cumin mingle along the edges and in the breath. Soft white breads in the back. My tongue tingles with each quaff. Ripe tropical fruits.
Final Thoughts: wow! Grapefruit was our family business for two generations and while the Lier family may no longer be involved the grapefruit will always have a soft place in my heart. The stuff sold in supermarkets is crap; if you want real grapefruit really good you need to find a local grower and look into buying a bushel during picking season. In the meantime, I’ll get my grapefruit fix with the Dos Costas Oeste thanks to Cigar City.

It smells of saltwater, brie, ginger extract, wheaten grain, and poppy seeds. Its pours is a delightful orange tangy color brimming an off-what head with lively bubbles that sinks into itself within a minute of sitting. Tastes of table sugar, green apples, pear skins, hop bitterness, grass trimmings. Ends with an odd seaweed/salty characteristic that honestly I don’t know what to make of it.

Thanks RadarSock for sharing this bottle! Enjoyed in a Portsmouth Snifter.

A - Hazy light orange. Lots of bubbles. 1-finger head that fades fast.

S - Lots of fruit in this. Sort of spicy. Hints of ginger.

T - Big ginger up front. Lemons and grassy. Very florally and a finish that’s peppery.

M - 85% Carbonation on the mouth swish. Medium body. Peppery sweet finish. Dry champagne finish too.

O - This is a great beer. Surprisingly good. Still maybe too peppery and spicy.

750 ml to oversized snifter (thanks mikem409). Looks good; orange with thin white lacing. Smells solid; sweet, grapefruit, and coriander. Tastes like it smells with a good mouthfeel. Good beer; interesting.
