This high-gravity gob of gourd-y goodness incorporates pumpkin in the mashing process and then gets wicked with the spices including Ceylon cinnamon, Jamaican all spice, Zanzibar cloves and nutmeg.

I poured a 750ml bottle into a tulip glass. It was given to me by a friend from Florida (thanks, Matt!). He said it retails for $11.99 ($0.47 per ounce). It was bottled on 8/26/13.

Appearance: Absolutely beautiful shade of flame orange/ruby red/burgundy. Pours to a large, off white, frothy head which laces and retains extremely well.

Smell: Pungent aroma of cinnamon, clove, vanilla, plus general potpourri and pumpkin pie scents.

Taste: It takes a lot for a pumpkin beer to wow me these days. Lately, Iíve been finding most tend to be pretty standard at best, so for one to knock my socks off is practically a miracle. I guess thatís quite a buildup for Cigar City Good Gourd, since itís not only a great pumpkin beer, but a great beer in its own right. And for good reason - itís complex, delicious, looks great, smells great and is easy to drink. Itís pretty much perfect.

Iíve always said pumpkin beer tend to be either liquid pumpkin pie or liquid potpourri, but this beer is actually both simultaneously. Right off the bat thereís a strong sensation of cinnamon, allspice and clove. They bristle across the palate, imparting an interesting sweet and spicy dynamic. On the second half itís all pumpkin pie. The clove remains, followed by a sweet confectionery-like taste of pumpkin pie filling and CrŤme BrŻlťe. This is a flavor palette Iíve never experienced before, which makes this beer all the more impressive when put into complex. There seems to be a slight alcohol sensation as well, itís akin to spiced rum and accentuates the palette perfectly.

Drinkability: Not only is Cigar City Good Gourd is darn tasty beer, but the drinking experience itself is very pleasant. The mouthfeel is thick, but not sticky, with a smooth, velvety texture. It actually feels good in the mouth, and its smoothness going down is nothing short of amazing. At 8.5% ABV itís extremely efficient, making full use of its potential as it has a vast amount of flavor and a full body, but isnít boozy or obese in any way.

Bottle fromTotal Wine Naples. Pours brown with a brown head. Doesnít leave any lacing. Low on carbonization. Nice, rich pumlkin notes on the nose. Finally a pumpkin beer that actually smells like pumpkin. Big pumpkin of the tongue as well. Truly fantastic!

Bottle - Wow! Aroma is pumpkin pie, heavy on the cinnamon side. The taste is pure pumpkin, though, which is nice. Starts sweets and leans sour as it warms. Very balanced between sweet and sour. Very nice!

Bottle, 11/12/2013. Pours dark ruby brown, clear, thin white head dies to swirl on the surface. Aroma is pumpkin pie, nutmeg and cinnamon, vanilla and sweet fruit cake toffee character, holiday spices. Taste is dark pumpkin bread, moderately sweet, cinnamon and nutmeg, clove, spicy finish with mild bitterness. Medium heavy body, concentrated and smooth. Donít normally go for pumpkin beers, but pretty decent.

This fall I had my first Good Gourd as my first beer for a tailgate; after most of the pumpkin hype season had died down. I poured it into a red wine glass (my best option) and immediately noticed that I liked the color and aroma much more than certain other pumpkin ales. My first sip, I was hooked. I bought up several more, two for this winter, and a few to age for next year. I picked the first one up for $13, and the next few for $14; and they were certainly worth the price IMHO.

750mL bottle, 2012 variety consumed Halloween. I find this to have more of a mulled spice character which is quite nice, its not drying or quenching in the amount of spice and certainly has some pumpkin flavor. Quite tasty.

Bottle, split with two of my best friends. This beerís #300 rating. Poured a nice, smooth amber color with a medium sized slightly off-white head. Aroma was notes of light pumpkin pie, vanilla. Spices are there, but they are not overpowering. This has a much more natural note of pumpkin itself, as opposed to a overly spiced beer. Flavor was divine. This was like eating a fresh slice of pumpkin pie. Well balanced spices bring out the wonderful flavor of pumpkin itself. Very smooth, and the alcohol is pretty well hidden in this one. Highly drinkable, and perhaps my favorite (out of market) pumpkin beer to date.

2013 and 2012 bottles. Poured amber with white head. Aroma of clove, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice. Taste is sweet, spicy, and smooth. 2013 has fuller mouthfeel. Otherwise, all the same and tasty.

UPDATED: OCT 25, 2013 From a trade with tampaheel-thanks, brother! Gotta say I donít generally like pumpkin beers and not a fan on pumpkin pie, but (rating this objectively) this stuff is liquid pumpkin pie. They just nailed it. Walks the right line of not being too sweet and incredible spice. Amazingly well done if itís your thing, itís not mine, but respect. If it was my thing it would be: 9/3/9/3/18
