COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This 60 IBU Caribbean-style IPA was brewed at the Cervezas del Sur Brewery in Ponce, Puerto Rico by Cigar City Brewmaster Wayne Wambles. The mango tree-lined streets of Ponce put us in a tropical mood and Hopped on the High Seas is the result of that Caribbean feeling. High Seas is a 7% ABV IPA dry-hopped exclusively with one variety of hop; 165 lbs of them in fact! And since we wanted to put this beer in our favorite container, the 12 oz can, a sea journey was required to get the beer back to Tampa for canning. We took the opportunity to add the dry-hops to the refrigerated shipping container prior to racking. Which means this beer truly was Hopped on the High Seas. As the beer made its way home, the gentle motion of the ocean worked to infuse the luscious aromatics of the hops. The result is big tropical aromas and flavors, light balancing malt backbone and a clean bitter finish.

12 oz. can from Fritz123 - thanks again, Mason! Pours a hazed goldenrod color with a lot of yeast floaters and an explosive, rocky, large-bubbled off-white head that sticks to the glass a little. Can kind of gushed, honestly. Aroma of bread, straw, citrus peel, pine, mango, and spice. Flavor of bitter grass and leaves, citrus rind, pine, soap, crackers, and minerals - has a bitterness thatís just...off. Has a sort of chemical quality. Light-bodied, with carbonation thatís all in the head and a dry, alcoholic mouthfeel. Not the worst thing ever, but this is definitely a pretty big misfire for Cigar City.

Something was wrong here. Can came in a trade and the top was so distended I was scared to hold it. I made the mistake of opening this one in my sink. Should have opened it outside! The beer rocketed into the sink and sprayed everywhere. Emptied nearly the entire can in a split second. The small pour that I got was overly sweet and syrupy. Seems like an unattenuated beer made it into cans. Pretty gross and dangerous.

Crisp, slightly hazy golden and honey coloured body with a nice two centimetre tall off-white head that leaves a very ugly lace. Aroma of honey, flowers, herbs, grass and hay with a decent malt nose and some light alcohol as well - not too hoppy in the traditional sense. Medium-bodied; Assertive grassy and very floral hop notes with a light malt and honey flavour that finishes nicely. Aftertaste shows more of a malt profile with some sweetness, a light herbal flavour and a hint of alcohol as well. Overall, a solid IPA but with a much lighter flavour and taste than Iíd expect and less hops compared to the others from this series that Iíve had. I sampled this twelve ounce can purchased a few minutes ago at New Beer Distributors in New York, New York a few minutes later in my hotel room here on the LES of New York on 18-July-2014 for US$2,50.
