Bottle from Mane Liquor. Mighty fine pour. Pitch black with a small dark cocoa coloured head which clings to the sides of the glass. Nose is subtle and complex. Milk chocolate, espresso and smoke are all in check with each other on the nose. Very cigar box like aroma. Taste showcases the cedar perfectly. The prefect balance of rich, heavy, dark chocolate and coffee enveloped in the spices and ash/smokey notes of cedar. Great balance and length. Pretty fantastic beer

Fantastic compliments from the cedar and the light pepper shaker tones vanilla creamy rich roastiness. Pronominal!

A: Pours a nice deep dark black hue with a small mocha head. The retention is low but some spotty lace is noted. Once the head dies down it is matte black in color and very evil looking in the glass.
S: I still dream of the aroma of this one. Tons of fresh roasted malt with layers of chocolate, both bitter and sweet. Hints of coffee poke thru, and then bam.... the cedar. How come no one else had tought of that?
T: If this beer is lacking anywhere, the taste makes up for it ten fold. Roasted malt comes first. It was perfectly toasted and good. After that you are hit in the face with chocolate. The rich smooth chocolate quality of this beer is what cake and fudge makers dream of. The beers is so smooth and rich like nothing I have had before. Milk chocolate makes an appearence as does caramel and marshmellow. The cedar dances in the background but does not overpower. To call this beer expertly crafted is an understatement.
M: Full in body, very rich, as smooth as a babys ass. When it comes to mouthfeel this was the smoothest most enjoyable beer I have ever tasted.
D: So drinkable, it is my absolute favorite beer to date.

750ml bottle, 2009 edition, courtesy of ibrew2or3. thanks, dave! aged nicely for a bit, this on pours a thick, oily, jet-black with a beautiful, this, dark cocoa colored head elegant sheets of lace. aroma is absolutely wonderful with massive notes of dry cedar, charred cedar, and toasted cedar (it’s got a lot of cedar!) backed by roasted espresso, dark chocolate, chicory, and bit of smoke with subtle notes of dark fruits, crushed red pepper, ground black pepper, and wet leather. flavor is magnificent with the spicy, toasted cedar notes settling beautifully into the background behind bittersweet dark chocolate, fresh roasted coffee, and dark fruits with massive roasted malts, pralines, chocolate brownies, smoke, peppercorns, and cigar paper at mid-palate and finishing with an unbelievably unique spicy, woody, sweet, roasted quality i’ve never experienced before. palate is amazingly smooth and rich but expertly balanced by the spice of the cedar with a full bodied, oily mouthfeel and perfect carbonation. overall, one of the finest and most unique imperial stouts i’ve ever tasted. if CCB didn’t brew Hunahpu’s, this would absolutely be their best beer. bravo.

UPDATED: MAR 17, 2009 Courtesy Retorp. Poured a nearly opaque black, some glints of mahogany around the edges. The aroma is mind boggling, cedar and roast dominate, with more subtle notes of tobacco, coffee and some dark fruits. The flavor is hugely roasty, with a slight smokiness coming through. Absolutely stellar.

Poured from a bottle into a CBS snifter.
A. Pours a dark black, mocha brown head the settled to a light foam layer.
S. Smells of chocolate, toffee, and a little caramel.
T. Tastes of milk chocolate, light toffee and caramel with a mild hop profile showing.
M. Very thick and chewy, malty and very sticky finish.
O. Super good beer. Amazingly simple and pleasureful beer, chocolate in the right amounts, a great RIS and well made. I will be looking for a bottle of this in the future.

Bottle from Damico. Outstanding. Pours a black color with a caramel colored head. More creamy head than standard Zhukov. Aroma of chocolate, cherries, and cedar. Some slight roast. Sweet chocolate taste with slight cherries and roast. Nice bitter layer. The cedar rounds out the finish nicely - a gentle spice from the cedar. Love it. A big thanks to Damico for this one.

Tap at Rattle N Hum. Deep black pour with a creamy tan head. The nose is awesome. Loads of rich chewy cedar character and even a kiss of vanilla that I didn’t get in the original. The cedar really adds a lot to this and seems to counter the heavy roastiness that is apparent in the original. A little bit of salty roastiness on the finish… yup, this works for me.
