In Mayan mythology, Hun Hunahpu was the father of the Mayan hero twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque. Hun Hunahpu, along with his brother Vucub Hunahpu, was tricked by the Dark Lords of the underworld and slain. Hun Hunahpu’s corpse morphed into a cacao tree, his head becoming a cacao pod, which in typically awesome mythology fashion, spit upon the hand of a young maiden named Xiquic who promptly became pregnant with the hero twins. The twins would ultimately grow up to avenge their father and uncle and defeat the Dark Lords and ascend the heavens to become the moon and sun. We brew Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout once a year and release it only at the brewery. We will continue to do so until the end of the cycle. Released on the second Saturday in March at the brewery.

Epic tasting at Chris’s place with Dak in attendance. Knocked off 3-4 top 50 beers in one night. A bottle of this was passed around, and a bottle of the BA was passed around. An interesting discussion ensued. I actually preferred the smooth warmth of the BA, while others preferred the subtle nuances of pepper and cinnamin that were obscured by the strength of the BA treatment. This was rich and sharp. Definitely pick up the spiciness. I’d love to have a 10 oz. pour of this to spend an hour with as it warmed up. Nice brew.

UPDATED: MAR 14, 2013 2011 Bottle at Fermentation Lounge. Pours pitch black with a creamy dark brown head with hints of ruby. Aroma is tons of unsweetened chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malts and vanilla. Sweet cocoa up front and roasted coffee beans fading in chocolate with chili’s and cinnamon coming in at the end. Very rich body but not overly sweet and alcohol is well hidden. Extremely good beer.

Chocolatey aroma. Black in color with a deep tan head. Chocolatey, raisiny with a slight spiced complexity (almost cinamony).

750ml thanks to jrob21. Pours black as night with a thick skim of soapy, mocha brown head that has great retention and leaves a few specks of lacing. Aroma is roast, sweet malt, earth, autumn leaves, spice, chocolate, dark caramel and light ashy smoke. Flavor is roast, coffee, lots of chocolate, heavy toasted nuts, light smoke, spicy cinnamon, roasted peppers, earth, toast and vanilla. Finishes with toast, roasted nuts, molasses, vanilla and herbal hops. Palate is heavy bodied, creamy and a little sticky throughout with a light carbonation and fairly neutral finish. Fantastic beer, really just works deliciously from the first sip at nearly fridge tamp to the last at nearly room temp.

750 ml brown bottle. 2011. Pours a thick bad ass used motor oil black with a head that is also black and some tan. i’ve never seen a head so black on a beer. The aroma has chocolate, spices, vanilla, and some pepper spice. Wow the taste is like a chocolate milkshake and the more I smell it I realize there is a lot of bready qualities, very bready. The taste also has roasted, spices, chocolate. This is a massive beer and all its parts seem to work together very well. the palate is rich and creamy. This really reminds me of the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate at Serendipity 3 if anyone has been there. Possibly the baddest flavorful Imperial stout with out being over the top.

UPDATED: JAN 11, 2013 Pours black with dark brown head. Smells of chocolate and a bit of coffee. Tastes of chocolate, caramel, it’s nice and roasty and leaves a beautiful heat lingering on the palate. Alcohol content smooths out this beer nicely. Considered using it as cologne, but decided that anything other than drinking it would be a disgrace.

2011 vintage. Very dark pour. Taste is of rich chocolate with a hint of chili pepper. One of the thickest beers bodywise I have ever had. Alcohol is hidden extremely well. Great beer, haven’t had any others quite like it.

BLACK with dark brown head. Chocolate, gamey-meat, vanilla, thick meat sauce. Flavor is peppered and spiced all chocolate burnt up with caramel. Reminds me of a dark chocolate caramel out of a really nice box of chocolate with peppered meat added.
