COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In Mayan mythology, Hun Hunahpu was the father of the Mayan hero twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque. Hun Hunahpu, along with his brother Vucub Hunahpu, was tricked by the Dark Lords of the underworld and slain. Hun Hunahpu’s corpse morphed into a cacao tree, his head becoming a cacao pod, which in typically awesome mythology fashion, spit upon the hand of a young maiden named Xiquic who promptly became pregnant with the hero twins. The twins would ultimately grow up to avenge their father and uncle and defeat the Dark Lords and ascend the heavens to become the moon and sun. We brew Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout once a year and release it only at the brewery. We will continue to do so until the end of the cycle. Released on the second Saturday in March at the brewery.

Bottle Pour. This beer is dark as can be. Oily, thick and resinous. Hunahpu is so thick it leaves my glass looking like a resin covered bong. The nose on this beer is as complex as the palate. Chocolate, char, vanilla, earthy peppers and alcohol hit the nose full force. The palate of this beer is immensely layered. I first get dark bitter chocolate that is quickly sweetened by the vanilla treatment and chocolatey malt character. Following that comes earthy smokey peppers that compliment the deep roastiness of the malts with slight heat to kick. The heavy viscosity and moussey carbonation combine for a luxurious and velvety mouthfeel. I enjoy my beer with food, hunahpu will make good company with spicy, savory and rich ethnic dishes.

On tap at Hunahpu 2011, pours dark, smoky, spicy aroma. Sweet, Vanilla and strong. I’m not huge on the chili spice, but the chocolate really fellows the whole experience out. Well worth the hype.

Growler gift from Southern Johnny. I heard alot about this one and I was not dissapointed. Black pour with reddish hue, aroma of coffee, vanilla bean and wood. A chocolate, cinnamon taste that finishes smooth but mildly peppery. Vert Good!

Bottle from tytoanderso. Pour is black with a small dark brown head that quickly fades. Maybe one of the best looking imperial stouts I’ve seen. Aroma is similar to zhukov, so I’m a bit nervous that this may no longer have the hunahpu characteristics. Licorice forward, with a touch of cinnamon and spice. The taste is where this separates itself from zhukov. Taste is heavier on cinnamon, with small amounts of chocolate and vanilla. Had I not known that it is aged on peppers I would have never noticed that slight burning sensation this produces in the throat long after each sip. Nice meadium heavy body, with great subtle carbonation. Really interesting beer that sets itself apart from the base beer with how it tastes. Looking forward to trying this one fresh.

Bottle: Poured a deep black with a two finger light brown head. Aroma is thick of chocolate and cocoa. Wow the taste comes head on at your taste buds, there plenty going on rich chocolate, spicy hints from the pepper, and yet there is a subtle alcohol burn to remind you this is beer.

I am fortunate enough to live in the "Cigar City"of Tampa where this world class beer was born. Hence I had access to several bottles. To be completely honest, this is one of the best beers that I have ever had, easily in the same class as Dark Lord, Lost Abbey Serpent’s stout etc.. The aroma is of the finest bittersweet dark dark chocolate and Sumatran coffee with some slight vanilla in the background. Appearance is a glass of thick viscous motor oil with beautiful lacing and a 2 finger head. The taste is like heaven in a glass for a stout lover. Slightly bitter with a warm alcohol taste but not overwhelming. Strong bittersweet chocolate, cocoa nibs and coffee flavor with a vanilla background on the back of the palate. Didn’t get the ancho chiles at first but after a few sips you can taste just enough to be pleasant and interesting. Memorable palate, thick and rich, slightly bitter and sticky. I obviously loved this beer. I just wish that they would brew it year round. I’ll just have to buy enough to last.

Bottle via one of the people that sent me a bottle, thanks. Dark black pour, small but thick dark tan head. Chocolate, lightly roasty, lots of sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, mild chili pepper, and a bit chalky. A nice imperial stout. Overrated? yes. I had the Sinners 2010 after this and enjoyed it quite a bit more.
