In Mayan mythology, Hun Hunahpu was the father of the Mayan hero twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque. Hun Hunahpu, along with his brother Vucub Hunahpu, was tricked by the Dark Lords of the underworld and slain. Hun Hunahpu’s corpse morphed into a cacao tree, his head becoming a cacao pod, which in typically awesome mythology fashion, spit upon the hand of a young maiden named Xiquic who promptly became pregnant with the hero twins. The twins would ultimately grow up to avenge their father and uncle and defeat the Dark Lords and ascend the heavens to become the moon and sun. We brew Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout once a year and release it only at the brewery. We will continue to do so until the end of the cycle. Released on the second Saturday in March at the brewery.

Bottle @ home. Aroma is roasty malt, chocolate, molasses, coffee, spices, this, that and more. Flavour is deep and roasty, with molasses, chocolate, huge espresso, quite bitter and roasty, yet creamy. Lazy rate, awesome beer.

I brought this one to stakem’s fish fry. One of my personal favorites, this particular bottle was from the original release. A - Pours jet black with a nice one finger tall tan head leaving small, thin trails of lace down parts of the glass. S - Smells of chocolate, chill spice, dark roasted malt, coffee grounds, tobacco and a tiny bit of vanilla. This one has muted quite a bit from when it came out. T - Starts off with a ton of dark roast quickly giving way to a mix of dulled chocolaty sweetness, day old coffee grounds, light chili spice and some wet tobacco. Not as muted down as the nose is, still very nice. A touch of booze comes in at the finish, combining with some of the dark roast to linger on the pallet for some time. M - This is definitely a big beer. It has lost some of its trademark spice over the years in the bottle but it still has a nice thick body and bold flavors with a good amount of carbonation. O - This one was definitely showing its age. When fresh, this beer is nearly impossible to beat. I will never turn down a glass of this beer. It is truly one of the best stouts out there.

Black bodied with firm tan head. Looks great. Creamy, lots of flavour vanilla, chocolate, spices bread. Very smooth body warming backup. Faint hotness, but nothing burning. Does make a very rich taste. Sticky body. Very flavourful. (75cl bottle, at dEnk house tasting)

It poured a pitch black color with a small off-white head. The aroma was malt, coffee and green peppers. The flavor followed the nose. This was a really good beer.

Bottle. Opaque, black liquid with mahogany/red hue and really tan/brown head. Aroma of chocolate, vanilla, chili (ancho), fresh coffee, licorice, wood and some ash and caramel. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter with notes of chocolate/cocoa, fresh coffee, deep chili flavours and vanilla. Absolutely delicious. Full bodied with nice carbonation and really creamy, sticky mouthfeel. Super balanced and well made. Lots of chocolate/cocoa, vanilla and some deep chili.

Pours pitch black with a Frothy dark Brown head. The nose is dark fruits, roasted malt, cocoa, molasses and coffee. The taste is molasses, burnt malt, dark chocolate, coffee and a nice bitter hoppy finish. This beer has several different layers of complexity as it warms. Including The pepper warmth. Medium creamy mouth feel. Very good – worthy of the hype.

UPDATED: MAR 9, 2013 Date: March 24, 2012 Mode: Bottle Source: DalzAle tasting Description: Opaque black pour with nice brown head and lacing. This was smooth, chewy, chocolate and fudge. Like a liquefied fudge brownie, just delicious. Thanks Caleb for sharing! Re-rate on November 16, 2012 bottle shared by Brandon. This had way more spice than I remember. Moved down taste, palate and overall by one each.
