Bottle. Pours a pitch black beer with a chocolate head. The aroma is malt, coffee, cold coffee, green peppers and soya. The flavor follows the nose. The palate is dry and roasted with sweetness. Overall a really good beer.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
2009 Bottle courtesy of the Cheeseman. Pours as viscous as motor oil with a tan head with ruddy highlights. Smells like vanilla ice cream in a cocoa sauce spiked with red pepper. Dark chocolate, roasted malt, with a tinge of spiciness that hits the side of the tongue. Finishes long with a bite of the pepper with no hint as to the 11% alcohol bill. Truly amazing beer.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
2011 bottle courtesy of burg326. Aroma is fantastic; chocolate and roast are very potent, cocoa, and sweet chocolate, almost get a note of fresh baked dense chocolate cake, caramel and molasses, vanilla. Some hop bitterness, spicy note from the chilies, cinnamon, somewhat earthy.
Pours like used motor oil, completely opaque, I can’t even see through the stream as I pour into the glass, nice tan head which is thicker than I presumed such a beer could support, retention is only a minute or two before subsiding to a thin ring of foam.
Flavor starts off with a load of sweet chocolate and roast; the roast flavor is pleasant and mellow, not at all puckering or astringent. Caramel and cocoa, toffee, molasses, dark sugars and some dates, dark roasted coffee, nice vanilla presence. Cinnamon really shows up once the chocolate and roast have a second to dissipate, slight flavor from the chilies, but they show up more in the form of a nice warmth in the finish.
Very full body, thick and chewy, coats the palate and keeps the flavors lingering for quite a while. Medium carbonation.
Just a fantastic stout, amazing how so many flavors come together and work so well, very well done!

Black with a small light brown head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, green peppers and chili. A vegetable and pepper note dominates the flavour, along with cloying sweet malts.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: MAY 23, 2011 Pours black with a thick dark head. Smells of loads of chocolate, espresso, tobacco, licorice, and leather. Cinnamon and spices catch me by surprise. Offering flavors of decadent chocolate, heavy roasted coffee, sweet licorice, and copious lactose sugars. The finish is long and bitter with a good roasted finish. The peppers come in right at the finish and provide a very welcomed warming effect. It feels more like alcohol warmth than it does a vegetal spice. Very well done. I was very surprised to have enjoyed this one so much.

2011 Release - 25.4 oz bottle - poured into 10 oz snifter
AROMA: Dates, oak, chocolate, brown sugar, and vanilla.
APPEARANCE: Poured pitch black and thick. Slightly more than minimal head that was dark brown in color.
TASTE: Intense flavor. There is a lot going on here. Chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon, some bitterness, finishes slightly spicy with a lingering chocolate taste.
PALATE: Medium to full bodied, creamy, and a bit of carbonation. Finishes spicy with some chocolate.
OVERALL: I feel very lucky to have acquired this via trade (thanks clintonpuckett - BA). This is the fist time that I have tried a stout with chiles in it and now this is one of my favorites. Excellent job Cigar City!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
2010 bottle tasted on 5/8/11. The pour is ridiculously thick and black with a large dark brown head. CC gets the darkest brown foam from their stouts! The aroma is lots of dark chocolate with hints of vanilla and subdued chiles. There’s also some nice dark fruit notes of dates, raisins, and cherries. The flavor is big on dark fruity plums, raisins, cherry and lots of semi sweet dark chocolate. The vanilla and spice has faded a bit since I remember having this fresh and getting way more chile spice. I actually pick up more of a green chile flavor than spicy heat. The cinnamon still shines through very nicely. It has just a touch of soy and ashy roasted malt in the finish. This was a real treat just for the wonderfully rich chocolate character. If you like it more intense, drink it young.
