COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In Mayan mythology, Hun Hunahpu was the father of the Mayan hero twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque. Hun Hunahpu, along with his brother Vucub Hunahpu, was tricked by the Dark Lords of the underworld and slain. Hun Hunahpu’s corpse morphed into a cacao tree, his head becoming a cacao pod, which in typically awesome mythology fashion, spit upon the hand of a young maiden named Xiquic who promptly became pregnant with the hero twins. The twins would ultimately grow up to avenge their father and uncle and defeat the Dark Lords and ascend the heavens to become the moon and sun. We brew Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout once a year and release it only at the brewery. We will continue to do so until the end of the cycle. Released on the second Saturday in March at the brewery.

Draft at Capone’s 6/5/10. Pours very deep brown, capped with a moderate sized brown head. Aroma of roasted chocolate malt and coffee up front with some vanilla highlights in the background. Flavor begins with chocolate, espresso, and vanilla in the forefront. Some green chili in the background adds really nice complexity. Coffee lingers, with some nice support from the vanilla.

UPDATED: AUG 6, 2012 Had this on tap at Cigar City early in the afternoon right after I got my ticket to buy the bottles. A: Pours a very viscous dark, dark brown with a very nice tan head with plenty of lacing. S: Whoa, lots going on here. Everything is almost overpowering, yet fits so well together. Lots of chocolate up front, followed by more subtle hints of roasted malt, vanilla, roasted chilis, and cinnamon. T: Even better than the nose. Right up there with the absolute best imperial stouts I’d had; definitely top three. All that’s there in the nose is there with the first sip, and the complexity of this beer only improves with each sip as it gets a bit warmer. The chocolate is definitely the base, and the light touches of cinnamon, vanilla, and chili peppers are fantastic and make this such a well-rounded beer. M: Very thick and huge. Nice and chewy, yet incredibly smooth. Fairly low carbonation, but entirely appropriate. No alcohol heat. D: Insane. Each sip brings forth new nuances. I spent less than 16 hours in Tampa, waking up a 3:00am on consecutive days for early flights (one of which didn’t pan out), and if I hadn’t gotten bottles, I’d still be supremely happy and thought the whole trip worth it. Bottle - thanks Dave. The pour is what I love in an impy; silky dark brown, near black and two fingers of creamy brown head. Looks delicious. Nose is roasty, chocolate, and espresso. Mouthful is silky and smooth, slightly oily. Taste is rich with the chocolate, dry roast, slightly smokey, and I just ever so slight sense the chili peppers hit the back of my tongue. Seamless transition of flavors. Thick sheets of sticky brown lacing. Badass brew.

first batch opened on my new years beer bash. Pours pitch black with small tan head. Aroma is explosive with sweet chocolate and a earthy tone lending to coffee. Drinks with coffee and sweet chocolate upfront with that earthy note im assuming from the peppers. Vanilla is faintly noticeable on the back end and finishing again with semi sweet chocolate and day old coffee. very nice beer but I think the peppers are throwing me off on putting this in my top 5 stouts.

Growler gift from Southern Johnny. I heard alot about this one and I was not dissapointed. Black pour with reddish hue, aroma of coffee, vanilla bean and wood. A chocolate, cinnamon taste that finishes smooth but mildly peppery. Vert Good!

This one has some hype to live up to. Pours dead black with the most amazing cocoa head ever. Smell is a bit off-putting. Nothing inviting here, bitter, dark hops and/or cacao. Taste is COMPLEX. Getting cacao beans, and a healthy cinnamon burn which is amazing. Coffee roast coming through as well. Not getting a ton of vanilla. Did I mention Cinnamon and chile burn? Wow, this is a wonderful taste. I love cinnamon and chocolate combined and this is the best of all worlds - Cinnamon, chocolate and BEER! But it works. This reminds me of the descriptions of ancient Aztec hot chocolate drinks back when the cacao bean wasn’t the invention of Milton Hershey. Not much else to say. Not going to be a favorite if you don’t like new things. :) I love this - though I can’t see drinking it all night.
