In Mayan mythology, Hun Hunahpu was the father of the Mayan hero twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque. Hun Hunahpu, along with his brother Vucub Hunahpu, was tricked by the Dark Lords of the underworld and slain. Hun Hunahpu’s corpse morphed into a cacao tree, his head becoming a cacao pod, which in typically awesome mythology fashion, spit upon the hand of a young maiden named Xiquic who promptly became pregnant with the hero twins. The twins would ultimately grow up to avenge their father and uncle and defeat the Dark Lords and ascend the heavens to become the moon and sun. We brew Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout once a year and release it only at the brewery. We will continue to do so until the end of the cycle. Released on the second Saturday in March at the brewery.

750ml bottle from Daknole. Pours EXTREMELY black, like the blackest I’ve ever seen with a very dark brown head. Aroma is rich chocolate covered cherries, reminds me of Dark Lord a little in that way. Graham cracker and olive juice. The peppers must be adding the olive component. Flavor is extremely chocolatey. Thick mouthfeel with roasty, dark dark chocolate flavor. I burped and it was just chocolate roastiness. The roastiness is akin to Expedition. The chocolate and roast might actually be too much for one beer making this beer a little less smooth. I’m kind of over Imperial Stouts at this point but this is a fine and unique example.

Wow! Poured from bomber black as night. Small tan head. Aroma was dark fruit, coffee, cinnamon and ginger. Flavor followed and changed as you dark and the glass warmed up. Complex, a little heat? good smooth but rich mouth feel.

Originally rated from a small sample in 2013; revised with 2014 bottle on March 2015. A touch too sweet. Chili still evident. Amazing complexity and delicious aroma.

The one negative thing that hurts this beer is inconsistency. 2013 b1 was incredible. 2013 b2 sucked. 2014 was good. 2011 was amazing. Fantastic beer and definitely one of the greats.

Poured from a 750cc bottle into a stem glass. Shared w/ML&JB. Pours crude oil black with a small quickly fading tan head. Nose is gingerbread, dark cherry, cinnamon, expresso, dark dried fruit, and notes of cacao. Flavour is cinnamon, dark chocolate, nutmeg, expresso, fig, vanilla, chili pepper, roasted malts, and notes of molasses and brown sugar.

Exactly what the label states. The nose and taste have pepper chocolate cinnamon... pours black and thick just like I like it. Great beer.

2015 bottle. Pours opaque black with tan head. Aroma is rich chocolate, cinnamon, light spice, roast, and woody character. Flavor is rich chocolate and espresso notes with nice spice profile and a nice roasty finish. Medium/full body.

Originally reviewed 6/10/2011. 750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. As black as they come. Not even a hint of brown in the stream of the pour as it comes out of the bottle. It foams up nicely as I pour it with a dark brown head. The only thing that’s missing is lacing, which is minimal. Unbelievable aroma. Deep dark chocolate. The friend I split it with said it smells like "really expensive chocolate." Roasty aromas abound with the chocolate and a slight burning in the nose from the alcohol and peppers. Delightful. Taste is an immediate hop bitterness that fades immediately to a strong flavor of dark chocolate. The pepper flavor burns the taste buds just slightly throughout the entire drink, never allowing the sweetness to overwhelm. In the middle are the dark roasted malt flavors, followed by a finish that wants to be sweet, but can’t overcome a hop bitterness and peppery bite. There’s heavy and chewy, but this is ridiculous. One of the heaviest beer I’ve ever had. Pretty high in carbonation considering the ABV and weight of the beer. Gives it a good tingle that complements the peppers nicely. Outstanding stout. The flavors are perfectly balanced, complex, and like no other stout I’ve had. The pepper addition is the pièce de résistance that elevates this beyond just a good stout.

Bottle shared with koleminer20, oh yes indeed. 2014 vintage. Aroma is cinnamon, cocoa, some chili presence, vanilla, roasted malt. Appearance is black, brown head, poured ridiculously thick. Taste is cinnamon up front, slight chili, chocolate, vanilla, hearty roasted malt, oh man. Mouthfeel is ridiculously thick, oily, perfect carbonation, so good. Overall...my god. I’ve waited so long for this and it’s everything I wanted.
