In Mayan mythology, Hun Hunahpu was the father of the Mayan hero twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque. Hun Hunahpu, along with his brother Vucub Hunahpu, was tricked by the Dark Lords of the underworld and slain. Hun Hunahpuís corpse morphed into a cacao tree, his head becoming a cacao pod, which in typically awesome mythology fashion, spit upon the hand of a young maiden named Xiquic who promptly became pregnant with the hero twins. The twins would ultimately grow up to avenge their father and uncle and defeat the Dark Lords and ascend the heavens to become the moon and sun. We brew Hunahpuís Imperial Stout once a year and release it only at the brewery. We will continue to do so until the end of the cycle. Released on the second Saturday in March at the brewery.

Chocolatey aroma. Black in color with a deep tan head. Chocolatey, raisiny with a slight spiced complexity (almost cinamony).

Originally reviewed 6/10/2011. 750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. As black as they come. Not even a hint of brown in the stream of the pour as it comes out of the bottle. It foams up nicely as I pour it with a dark brown head. The only thing thatís missing is lacing, which is minimal. Unbelievable aroma. Deep dark chocolate. The friend I split it with said it smells like "really expensive chocolate." Roasty aromas abound with the chocolate and a slight burning in the nose from the alcohol and peppers. Delightful. Taste is an immediate hop bitterness that fades immediately to a strong flavor of dark chocolate. The pepper flavor burns the taste buds just slightly throughout the entire drink, never allowing the sweetness to overwhelm. In the middle are the dark roasted malt flavors, followed by a finish that wants to be sweet, but canít overcome a hop bitterness and peppery bite. Thereís heavy and chewy, but this is ridiculous. One of the heaviest beer Iíve ever had. Pretty high in carbonation considering the ABV and weight of the beer. Gives it a good tingle that complements the peppers nicely. Outstanding stout. The flavors are perfectly balanced, complex, and like no other stout Iíve had. The pepper addition is the piŤce de rťsistance that elevates this beyond just a good stout.

Bottle shared with koleminer20, oh yes indeed. 2014 vintage. Aroma is cinnamon, cocoa, some chili presence, vanilla, roasted malt. Appearance is black, brown head, poured ridiculously thick. Taste is cinnamon up front, slight chili, chocolate, vanilla, hearty roasted malt, oh man. Mouthfeel is ridiculously thick, oily, perfect carbonation, so good. Overall...my god. Iíve waited so long for this and itís everything I wanted.

Bottle, shared at RBAG 2015 by kbudd. Inky oily near black pour. Lovely complexity here! Rich chococlate, hearty thick malts, cinnamon, coffee, capsicum. The pepper here is subtle and is just part of the overall beautiful landscape that paints the palate. Delicious.

Great beer overall. Nice chili taste but not too hot on the tongue. My favorite Cigar City beer and one of my favorite chili beers for sure.

Amazing hookup by Weezel, thank you sir. Iíve been wanting to give this one a try for some time. Enjoyed it in the backyard with the wife, while watching some fireflies. Pours a thick looking motor oil like colour, deep mocha head that also has oily looking legs, tiny lace spots, but not much. Nose is cinnamon, chilies, vanilla, surprisingly not much roasted malt that I would expect from the colour. It reminds me of my wifeís chocolate chip cookies. Tastes sweet, cinnamon initially, then gives way to a little heat from the chillies and abv, vanilla is a large part of it too, the chocolate flavour is a large part of this beer as well, which I can only assume is from the nibs. That could explain the heat factor as well. There is a fudge flavour as well as some dark fruits that contribute to the awesomeness. Itís thinner than you would expect from the pour. Complex and well rounded. Glad I finally had this bad boy.

Tasted the 2015 bottle. Pours black with a thick beige head. Awesome aroma of chocolate, coffee, vanilla and spices. Taste is equally impressive. Very complex. Flavors of chocolate, cinnamon, vanilla, coffee, caramel, chiles, dark fruits, toffee. Moderate to heavily sweet with mild bitterness. Syrupy mouthfeel. I'd put it up with Three Floyds Dark Lord as one of the best imperial stouts in the world. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
