COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In Mayan mythology, Hun Hunahpu was the father of the Mayan hero twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque. Hun Hunahpu, along with his brother Vucub Hunahpu, was tricked by the Dark Lords of the underworld and slain. Hun Hunahpuís corpse morphed into a cacao tree, his head becoming a cacao pod, which in typically awesome mythology fashion, spit upon the hand of a young maiden named Xiquic who promptly became pregnant with the hero twins. The twins would ultimately grow up to avenge their father and uncle and defeat the Dark Lords and ascend the heavens to become the moon and sun. We brew Hunahpuís Imperial Stout once a year and release it only at the brewery. We will continue to do so until the end of the cycle. Released on the second Saturday in March at the brewery.

Poured Black like the stallion of midnight and stuff. I noticed a light tan fizz on top that disappeared fast, like Grease Lightning. Smelled different not like the uncle you rarely see, but more like a Mexican pinata before it is filled, not really but it sounds fun. I guess the smells are from the chiles? The taste is blended nicely with hints of nutmeg or cinnamon, chocolate (unsweet), the blend of chiles and finishes quite dry.

Bottle shared by adnielsen during Christmas in Vail. Thanks Aaron! Pours a black color with tan head. Brownie, cinnamon, spicy peppers aromas. Spicy, chocolatey, fudge, cinnamon flavors. Some alcohol burn but it works with the spiciness. Fuck yeah

bottle from trade a couple of years ago - aged for 2.5 - 3 years. might have been a shade too long. In addition to the great aromas of spices, wood, ash, chocolate there was a little vinous aroma. nice palate. Taste was ok, but not outstanding; didnít live up to the hype for me - also didnít take detailed notes as I drank this 2 weeks ago - would try again, but wonít seek out...

Bittersweet cocoa, leathery, pruney, boozy aroma. Wine bottle, decent label. Pours like used 10w40. Sour, chocolate and coffee, subtle burn, raisins and dates. Warming. Overall effect is greater than the sum of the parts. Chewy. Great finish with lots of complexity that leaves me wanting more. Thanks to someone at Baby Proof for sharing. 2011 vintage.

What can I say? Cigar City Hunahpuís Imperial Stout lives up to the hype. Nice dark pour with a tight, tan head. Aroma is spicy blend of ancho chiles, chocolate and cinnamon. Taste is more of the same. The high alcohol content is hardly detectable -- nothing but smooth. Huhahpu is an intoxicating mixture of flavors that isnít matched anywhere. If you have the chance, do not pass up Hunahpu!

Bottle. Oily black. Aroma is chiles and cacao. The taste adds brown sugar, cinnamon, more cacao, and some vanilla. Warm, smooth, rich feel but, drinkable. This beer is amazing. Perfect execution and waves of flavor elements. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Pours oily jet black with no head. Aroma is dark fruit, fudge, cinnamon and peppers. Taste adds brown sugar, cocoa and graham cracker. A hint of vanilla bean turns up in the aftertaste. Thick sticky mouthfeel with a very long finish. Amazing.

2011 vintage, thank you very much Greg! Pours a completely black, slightly viscous color, with a small, dark brown head. Has rich aromas of chocolate, earthy, scorched malts, notes of molasses and a gentle coffee infusion, well balanced by unsweetened bakers chocolate. Tastes of smooth, creamy chocolate, joined by toffeeish malts, evoking a mousse au chocolate impression, joined by a sweeter, calming, slightly wooden vanilla note. Has a hot peak, at first introduced by a decent hop bitterness, carried by a generous malt earthiness, transforming into a spicy, hot chili burn. This spiciness numbes the palate for a short glance, then revealing an interplay between a slick coffee bitterness and mellow, sweet chocolate. Finishes with a semi-dry aspect and cinnamon to it, including the taste of whole, burned coffee beans, dipped into hot chocolate. Burning, hot Jalapeno and cinnamon are sticking on the outside of my teeth, accompanied by a subtle sweetness. The balance of this brew is outstanding, regarding its complexity. There are no moments in which any off-flavors get revealed, or in which the beer turns into something odd, but its full body is defined by a great smoothness and diversified taste.

2014 bottle. Aroma has a nice chocolate and roast note. Some raisin and dark fruit with a moderately strong cinnamon character. Medium light peppery spice note with a hint of alcohol. Pours black with some dark brown notes on the edges. Small, mocha head that recedes to a film in the middle. Light lacing and sheets of alcohol. Flavor is fairly sweet with quite a bit of chocolate. Chocolate is balanced by a nice roast character with bits of leather and dark fruit. Medium light cinnamon with light spice in the finish. Light alcohol. Mouthfeel is full bodied with medium light carbonation. Low astringency and medium alcohol warmth. Overall, a nice at out but it has too much cinnamon. Good chocolate and roast character. This beer just doesnít seem to do it for me.

UPDATED: DEC 19, 2014 2014 release, Bottle received in a trade, thanks! Pours pitch black with a espresso coloured ring. Aroma has dark chocolate, coffee, chili and vanilla. Taste has dark chocolate, molasses, fudge, coconut (and lots of it), vanilla, chili and cinammon. Full body, soft carbonation, thick yet smooth.
A fantastic Imperial Stout where the chili plays second fiddle, nice with a mellow heat for once in a while.

I try not to get caught up in the hype of beers like Cigar City Hunahpuís Imperial Stout that are only released once a year on a special day at the brewery for which you need to buy tickets in advance (i.e. Dark Lord, Kate the Great, etc.). But since two friends of mine in Florida were generous enough to send me a bottle of the last two editions, I figured it was okay to get a little excited. And now that Iíve tried the beer I can definitely see why it receives the praise it does. This is a very unique and impression imperial stout brew as it utilizes a variety of spices and flavorings to give it a taste youíre not going to find in any other beer of the style. Itís not quite world class, but it is damn good.

NOTE: The scores are indicative of the 2014 vintage.

The 2013 vintage was given to me by Christopher G. and the 2014 vintage was given to me by Matt S. Thanks to both of my friends for sending me these beers! I split each bottle with four friends. We poured them into various stemmed tulip glasses and goblets.

Appearance: Both vintages are, not surprisingly, completely opaque black and a very dark shade of black at that. Both had a dark brown, frothy head, though the 2013ís was slightly lighter. Both heads faded relatively quickly and only left a little bit of lacing.

Taste: My friends and I started out with the 2014 edition, which at the time of drinking was an 11-month-old bottle. Right away there was a huge sensation of dark baking chocolate Ė intensely bitter, but also rich with chocolaty sweetness. Dark cherry and other fruit flavors are prominent as well, probably likely derived from the use of massive amount of malt in the brew (a lot of imperial stouts tend to have similar characteristics). On the second half, a strong surge of cinnamon spice sweeps across the palate Ė creating for a Christmas cookie-like taste. As it goes down, thereís a warmth from the peppers, though I would not consider it spicy in a peppery way. All in all itís quite delicious, though a bit repetitive. Iíd probably prefer a touch more sweetness, but whatís here is extremely pleasant.

The 2013 edition was noticeably different. The pepper character had faded, though the chocolate component had not only strengthened, but gone from bitter dark chocolate to sweet milk chocolate. The alcohol was also a bit more pronounced, ironically enough, though it did create for a slightly smokey, bourbon-like flavor. Cinnamon was still quite potent on the finish, though it was more a sweetness than a spice. It left a residual cloying/sticky sensation which is common for many imperial stouts. I donít think anything was gained by aging this vintage, in fact, it was probably hindered a bit since the spicy character was weakened (though if you donít like spice, cellaring a bottle is the way to go).

Drinkability: It was clear right away that both of these beers were pretty beefy. I believe the 2013 edition was 11% ABV and the 2014 was 11.5%, though neither had any kind of ďextremeĒ quality to their weight. The mouthfeels were, of course, full-bodied, but with a soft texture and smoothness as it went down. Not much in the way of alcohol warmth, though the fresher vintage definitely had some noticeable heat from the peppers (but again, nothing too extreme). The 2013 vintage traded Scoville heat for alcohol heat and it was actually rather cloying in the aftertaste whereas the 2014 was remarkably dry. Iím glad I split these bottles with friends, though I was certainly feeling the weight of the brew bearing down on me afterwards. Splitting a bottle with friends and family is definitely the way to go.
