[bottle courtesy of cgarvieuk] Black, beige head. Looks like every other menacing barrel-aged porter. Has a slightly sweet, deep roasted malt aroma. Big whisky start on the flavour – sweet, deep bourbon before the finish arrives as slightly ashen. There is some lacto sweetness on the edge of the palate. It doesn’t sit to well with the other sweetness from the wood, however [22042012]

Bottle at the TURD tasting. Pours near black with a beige head. Light whiskey sweetness in the aroma, with roasted malts, and milk chocolate. The flavor is sweet, with whiskey, milk chocolate, a hint of vanilla, and lightly roasted malts. Pretty good.

In bottle, thanks Craig! A black beer with a huge tan head. Aroma of chocolate, alcohol, caramel and roasty malt. Similar flavours with a little lactose and dark chocolate also. An oily mouth-feel with a pronounced alcohol burn that lingers.

Bottle at cgarvieuk’s Danish Invasion tasting. Deep reddish black pour, thick brown head fades to a thin rim. Nice rich nose, big lacto, some coffee, dark chocolate, hint of vanilla oak but not particularly bourbon. Surprisingly non-milky, quite stout-ish in flavour (but not in body), dark chocolate, big bourbon flavours, touch of lacto, touch of vanilla, slight brett, pretty bourbon-dominated with a long warm boozy finish.

Bottle at a tasting at Max’s for Sam’s visit. Pours a deep black to brown with a medium sized tan head that falls off quickly. Sweet wood and bourbon, soft sweetness. Fairly sweet, something off, creamy and smooth. A touch of wood and heat. Interesting, but not for me.

750mL bottle. Poured deeper brown with a dense cap of medium tan head. The aroma picked up near-burnt milk chocolate and vanilla notes accented by sour whiskey and oak notes.. maybe a little too much barrel, but no real complaints. The flavor opened with tart lactose notes followed by sweet, tasty whiskey, milk chocolates, and ashy black patent.. finished with a hefty dose of milk chocolates and tangy, tasty whiskey.. not terribly complex, but I definitely enjoyed it. Medium-plus bodied, dry, and tangy on the palate.. lots of residual sugars in the end.. OK feel and flow.. I’m a fan of Stranahan’s, but wish the base beer asserted itself a little more.
