COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
What you have here is an Imperial Dark Rye Ale. Isn’t that a lot to be going on in just one beer? Well yes, it is. But that is the point. Layers. Flavor elements building on and playing off of preceding elements, like a building wave; a growing crescendum of taste bud temptation; a wall of sound expressed through flavor and channeled toward your mouth. This beer isn’t for everyone. In many ways it is more than just a little weird. It certainly doesn’t fit easily into any category. In the spirit of all great things that are conceived in the moment, but perfected through passionate repetition it started life as an improvisation and grew from there. And it might not be for you. But if the thought of big spicy rye notes, a wallop of a hop punch, multitudinous layers of caramel, sweet malt and a respectable balancing gravity sound intriguing then you might want to wing it and give Improv a try.

Bottle. Hazy light brown pour, plenty of carbonation and an aroma of oatmeal cookies and chocolate. Flavor was milk chocolate, vanilla and finished very creamy. Another well balanced CC brew.

9/12/2009: Cigar City Improvisación (Oatmeal Rye India Brown Ale)... Aroma: Freshly peeled orange; fruity rye. Appearance: Murky deep golden-brown with a thin beige head. Flavor: Slightly smoky (like tobacco) orange and grapefruit; dark brown sugar; a hint spicy. Palate: Medium to medium-full body; oily. Overall: Quite good, but somewhat confusing beer; maybe the conflicts could be resolved with several months of aging...

1 pint 9.4 fl. oz. bottle ( 9% Alcohol by Vol.) shared by Bigmmartin. Thanks Mike! Rating #60 for this beer.

Bottle from dchmela. Oh my GOD at the hops. But still, really nice malty aroma. Has a very bready and wheaty flavor mixing with the malt. Very crisp. Really nice.

Bottle thanks to Bigmmartin. Pours a warm brown with thin head. Aroma is hops with a solid malt backbone. Notes of oats, brown sugar, and a tiny bit of rye stand out. On the palate, it is a bit chewy, but still smooth. The flavor brings the oats forward some and it finishes with a bitter bite. Wow, what a great beer. I was really impressed with this one.

Bottle. Brown pour with a small head. Aroma is very unique. Never have I smelled both spice, chocolate and caramel together mixed with pine. The flavor is wonderfully blended. There is also a great hop presence and the flavors in the aroma come out in the taste as well.

(bottle from Skyview) Pours light brown with an off-white head that rings around the glass. Aroma is mainly of spicy rye, but there’s really not much else here. There’s a little bit of pine, grapefruit, and chocolate, but everything is pretty low-key. The taste is chocolate, grapefruit, pepper, and rye, with a lingering bitterness that dries the mouth. Mouthfeel is medium, with carbonation that’s a bit too high.

[Bottle] shared by Skyview. Pours cloudy brown with a medium, quickly dissipating beige head. Aroma is pretty slight, has a touch of rye, some sweet malt, pine, and a hint of hops. Flavor is smooth and smoky, a hint of spicy rye, Slightly nutty and chocolatey.

I have high hopes for this one. I do like my rye beers. Unfortunately the lack of stoma is startling. I rinsed my glass three times before pouring and I still smell cedar from the last beer over this beer’s aroma. A nice hazy body. I’m getting lots of hops but not much rye other than in the finish.

Has a great dakr pour. Off white brown foam head, light and sparse. Flavor is a mix of bitter/sweet. Has an enjoyable spicey with hints of chocolate and of course oatmeal.
