Jai Alai India Pale Ale pays tribute to the original extreme sport. Jai Alai, a game native to the Basque region of Spain, is played on a court called a fronton. Jai Alai players attempt to catch a ball using a curved mitt, whilst the ball travels at speeds of up to 188 miles per hour! Proving they have a sense of humor the Spanish dub this game, with its ball traveling at race car speeds, """"the merry game."""" Tampa was once home to a busy Jai Alai fronton but sadly all that remains of Jai Alai in the Tampa Bay area is this India Pale Ale that we brew in tribute to the merry game. The India Pale Ale style of beer has its roots in the strong ales sent from England to thirsty British troops in India during the 18th century. To survive the journey the beers needed more alcohol and more hops (which act as a natural preservative). This “big” brewing practice made India Pale Ale one of the first """"extreme beers"""" and a favorite among the Queens military men in India. Eventually it became a favorite style of the new crop of American brewers seeking more flavor and complexity than mass-market brewers were willing to offer.

Candy bubble gum with parts of spice show well with this nicely hopped IPA. Pours deep amber and drops a nice citrus and spice nuance on the sweet finish.

Pine bubble gum with a woody coating in a wet-dry texture followed by a rather Earthy citrus aroma. Nicely done! The pine does overtake the citrus a bit.

12oz - A little too sweet for me, missing some of the malt fullness, and by no means an IPA to me. Outstanding for Florida.

Hazy golden color with a nice white head and very good lacing. Very nice aromas of hops, citrus and some malt. Medium bodied with nice bitter citrusy hop flavors balanced by malt, citrus fruit and some sweetness. The amazing thing about this beer is that it always stays in balance with a lush mouthfeel and the hops always winning out in the flavor battle. CCB has done something few brewers can do, they have crammed all the flavors of an Imperial IPA into their regular bottling. This is without a doubt one of the best IPA’s available.

UPDATED: APR 3, 2013 Rerate: Holy cow, what a significantly different rating. On tap at Duffy’s for Bill’s memorial. Billy, Billy, Billy - what can I say ... Sandy & I could not let you handle that tab without us getting involved either. Poured orangey-tan with a nice head. Aroma has pine, resin, citrus and some spice. Taste is of bitter grapefruit, spicy spruce, a lot of resinous body with some underneath malt base - felt, more than tasted. A lovely brew. Also better in the can this year than the bottle version I’d had a few years back without the heavy cigar presence. Bill, you also were lovely in your way and a one-of-a-kind. Original rating: Bottle from Total Wine in Stuart. Pours a orangey-tan with a 1 inch head and a lot of under-head carbonation. Aroma is pine, spices, woodiness and cigars. Taste is pine, black pepper, mango with some woodiness. Quite dry. Finishes somewhat heavy with spiciness, both bitter and sweet. I cannot get past the cigar presence to enjoy as I could. 6-4-7-4-13.

Bottle thanks to drowland. Aroma is ripe tropical fruits, resiny hops, pine, sweet caramel malts. Pours amber with a slight haze, nice off-white head with good retention and clumpy lacing. Pine and resiny hops start off the taste, some grapefruit and orange, fairly forward bitterness which is well balanced by the bready and caramel malt character. Bitterness does linger for a bit, but it’s a nice pleasant hop flavor and is under control. Medium body, medium-high carbonation, prickly and effervescent.
