Jai Alai India Pale Ale pays tribute to the original extreme sport. Jai Alai, a game native to the Basque region of Spain, is played on a court called a fronton. Jai Alai players attempt to catch a ball using a curved mitt, whilst the ball travels at speeds of up to 188 miles per hour! Proving they have a sense of humor the Spanish dub this game, with its ball traveling at race car speeds, """"the merry game."""" Tampa was once home to a busy Jai Alai fronton but sadly all that remains of Jai Alai in the Tampa Bay area is this India Pale Ale that we brew in tribute to the merry game. The India Pale Ale style of beer has its roots in the strong ales sent from England to thirsty British troops in India during the 18th century. To survive the journey the beers needed more alcohol and more hops (which act as a natural preservative). This ďbigĒ brewing practice made India Pale Ale one of the first """"extreme beers"""" and a favorite among the Queens military men in India. Eventually it became a favorite style of the new crop of American brewers seeking more flavor and complexity than mass-market brewers were willing to offer.

Pour is a darker shade of brown for an IPA. Nose is light on the hops for an IPA. Taste is a bit maltier than that of the average IPA. Though lacking a bit in the hops, still a good tasting and refreshing beer.

Bottle from Florida. Pours dark brown with small head that retains. I would love to try this on tap or perhaps fresher than the bottle we obtained. Tasted a little stale but still quite good. I would like to try the cedar aged version.

12oz bottle, thanks to Julie and Mike for bringing it back from Tampa. Pours a dark clean amber with no head and light white lacing and light carbonation. Nice nose of hops and slightly floral. Very smooth and creamy, nicely balanced bitterness, the finish isnít overly complex but the hops and bitterness linger and leave a great taste everywhere. Wish i could get this on a regular basis.

UPDATED: MAR 6, 2014 Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark amber color with a large foamy white head that lingered and produced great lacing. The aroma was sweet pineapple, grapefruit and pine with a touch of wood. The flavor was tangy, tart and sweet with moderate notes of pinea, pinapple, lemon, orange and resin. The finish was long, tangy and piney. Medium body. Nice.

good beer, just not great for an IPA. the malts overwhelm almost all the hops. overall a good well balanced beer, just not hoppy enough.

pork slap meets hops, this beer is very malty for an IPA, itís not bad but not what I was expecting. it has a reasonable mix of hops and malts, but overall pretty good and drinkable, I would have it again

Cloudy yellow-orange with lasting creamy white head. Smells floral with some cherry and citrus. Tastes of grapefuit, pine and juicy ripe oranges with resinous hop bite, but somthing I canít quite put my finger on smoothing everything out. Very good.

On tap at Cigar City. Pours clear amber color with off white head. Aroma is citrus and pine. Medium mouthfeel. Flavor is citrus pine with a solid malt backbone. Finishes semi dry with a lingering citrus note. Nice brew.
