Jai Alai India Pale Ale pays tribute to the original extreme sport. Jai Alai, a game native to the Basque region of Spain, is played on a court called a fronton. Jai Alai players attempt to catch a ball using a curved mitt, whilst the ball travels at speeds of up to 188 miles per hour! Proving they have a sense of humor the Spanish dub this game, with its ball traveling at race car speeds, """"the merry game."""" Tampa was once home to a busy Jai Alai fronton but sadly all that remains of Jai Alai in the Tampa Bay area is this India Pale Ale that we brew in tribute to the merry game. The India Pale Ale style of beer has its roots in the strong ales sent from England to thirsty British troops in India during the 18th century. To survive the journey the beers needed more alcohol and more hops (which act as a natural preservative). This “big” brewing practice made India Pale Ale one of the first """"extreme beers"""" and a favorite among the Queens military men in India. Eventually it became a favorite style of the new crop of American brewers seeking more flavor and complexity than mass-market brewers were willing to offer.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a copper-brown color with a decent sized off white-head. Contains a fair amount of carbonation. Aromas of pine, grapefruit, fig, and alcohol. It carries the signature flavors of an IPA, namely citrus and pine. Hallmark bitterness too. A good balance b/w the malts and the hops. Medium bodied. Crisp and a bit tight on the palate. Pretty good stuff.

Amber, a bit hazy, nice just off-white head. Its got to have aroma, perhaps the air-conditioning is taking it away. Big mouthfeel. Hoppy, malty and full. Finishes dry, sharp and lingering hop flavor. A nice full flavor IPA

UPDATED: AUG 15, 2010 Orange hazy pour. Not the greatest aroma, more than made up for with the flavor. Hoppy, resinous and chewy, lots of citrus, unique malt profile. Bitter in the middle, nicely balanced with the hop flavor and malt. Nice dry finish with lingering happiness.

Bottle curtesy of Leif. The pour is cloudy amber which is pretty damn impressive for an IPA. The aroma is fruit with flavors of fruit, spice and citrus. Very delicious, very different, my first Cigar City Beer, and I am very excited.

On tap at the Liberty. Pours orange with a some white head to it. Has the smell of citrus and some malt. Taste is citrus up front with some sweet malts in the back. Not bad but not great either.

This poured a light orange color with a white head. Aroma was lots of citrusy hop notes and some caramel malt too. Flavor was a bit bland compared to the nose, medium bitterness and lighter fruity hop notes but I beleive this one did have a bit of age on it.

Bottle. Poured a hazy copper orange with a nice off white head. Aroma of citrus hops and sweet malt. Taste is sweet with some nice fruit hop notes. Fairly straightforward but very well done. Overall, a great IPA.

UPDATED: JUN 2, 2013 Tap at Pony Bar. Pours amber-orange with a sturdy, off-white head. Holds a powerful citrus hop aroma with sweet malt notes. Flavor is delicously sweet up front with fruit and caramel, then goes into hop land with grapefruit and pineapple predominating. Medium bodied with average carbonation and a slightly resiney, smooth texture. Finishes with sweet and sticky bitterness. So good. (4.1)

Bottle shared at the cabin - Canaan, NH. Pours golden brown with a white head. Sugary grapefruit on the nose, light pine. Very sweet, some caramel, a bit of heavy citrus, good bitterness. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Warming finish, quite oily and resinous, with mild toast, juicy grapefruit and a bit of booze. Good in general. (3.8)

Bottle kindly shared by plovmand at the beer packing plant. Pours amber with a off white head. Aroma is lots of caramel, a little pine, exotic fruits, alcohol and citrus hops. The flavour is caramel, pine, peach and nicely balanced bitter hops. Nice and dry-bitter finish.
