Jai Alai India Pale Ale pays tribute to the original extreme sport. Jai Alai, a game native to the Basque region of Spain, is played on a court called a fronton. Jai Alai players attempt to catch a ball using a curved mitt, whilst the ball travels at speeds of up to 188 miles per hour! Proving they have a sense of humor the Spanish dub this game, with its ball traveling at race car speeds, """"the merry game."""" Tampa was once home to a busy Jai Alai fronton but sadly all that remains of Jai Alai in the Tampa Bay area is this India Pale Ale that we brew in tribute to the merry game. The India Pale Ale style of beer has its roots in the strong ales sent from England to thirsty British troops in India during the 18th century. To survive the journey the beers needed more alcohol and more hops (which act as a natural preservative). This “big” brewing practice made India Pale Ale one of the first """"extreme beers"""" and a favorite among the Queens military men in India. Eventually it became a favorite style of the new crop of American brewers seeking more flavor and complexity than mass-market brewers were willing to offer.

Can. Cloudy orange copper with a small, off white head that lasts in a ring and laces. Aromas of caramel, biscuit, pine, pink grapefruit, and light orange peel. Flavor is the same, malty upfront with some bitterness in the middle followed by sweet citrus. Medium bodied, smooth with a dry bitter finish that lingers.

Beavertown Spectrum Fest. Keg. Hazy amber beer, tidy cream colour head. Palate is smooth and good minerally crispness. Sweetish malts, some caramel. Orange peel hops. Pine. Trace of resin. Mild crisp finish. Nice.

Aroma: floral hops, honey, dusty grain malts, citrus fruits. Appearance: slightly hazy, dark brown, small, white, creamy head. Taste: light bitter. Palate: floral hops, dry bitters continue, grain malts, and again some citrus / oranges. Overall: very nice IPA, intense and well-balanced. Pint at Beavertown Brewery, Tottenham.

Aroma of orange juice, fudge, pine floor. Good bitterness in the taste, juicy hops, very pronounced orange notes, some spice; citric and dry aftertaste with medium duration. Full body. Very, very fruity IPA, which doesn’t lack the necessary hop kick. Delicious stuff.

On tap at Kerr’s Winghouse in Daytona. Pours a slightly hazy orange color with a white head. Aromas of, spruce, citrus and hay. Taste the same with some, grass and herbs and clove. Nice example of an ipa. Light on the palate. Little lacing in the glass.

Slightly hazed burnt orange pour with tight knit white head and lacing. The semi-sweet malt backbone stands up to the hop punch concoction of peach, grapefruit, onion, and earthy tones. Decent IPA.

Pours orange with large creamy white diminishing head. Cloudy particles, good lacing. Average malts, cookie and caramel. Heavily hoppy, flowers, pine, orange and citrus, with hints of tangerine. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation, bitter aftertaste. A top class IPA.

From tap pours a hazy orange with nice white head. Aroma was fresh with notes of citrus like mango, pineapple and orange. Taste was fresh citrus with sweet malt backing. The bitter comes in to balance the sweet. Everything about this is well balanced.

Jai Alai, how have you managed to avoid me all this time? As one of the first great IPA’s to be available from a can, Jai Alai has a longstanding reputation. If you’re a hophead, you’ll know why immediately. It’s dank, juicy, tropical, earthy, piney, citrusy, grassy, floral, and herbal. Want another adjective? Here’s one more: delicious. Goddamn.

Hazy copper orange with a nice sized head. The aroma has a mix of grapefruit, orange, and mellow pine resin, as well as some sweet malt. The flavor is pretty much the same, finishing moderately bitter. Nice.
