Jai Alai India Pale Ale pays tribute to the original extreme sport. Jai Alai, a game native to the Basque region of Spain, is played on a court called a fronton. Jai Alai players attempt to catch a ball using a curved mitt, whilst the ball travels at speeds of up to 188 miles per hour! Proving they have a sense of humor the Spanish dub this game, with its ball traveling at race car speeds, """"the merry game."""" Tampa was once home to a busy Jai Alai fronton but sadly all that remains of Jai Alai in the Tampa Bay area is this India Pale Ale that we brew in tribute to the merry game. The India Pale Ale style of beer has its roots in the strong ales sent from England to thirsty British troops in India during the 18th century. To survive the journey the beers needed more alcohol and more hops (which act as a natural preservative). This “big” brewing practice made India Pale Ale one of the first """"extreme beers"""" and a favorite among the Queens military men in India. Eventually it became a favorite style of the new crop of American brewers seeking more flavor and complexity than mass-market brewers were willing to offer.

Out of a can. A quick beer while waiting for a flight at MIA. Poured a very hazy orange with moderate white head. Leaned towards the malt with the hops showing moderate low pine and citrus.

Sample on tap at Hill Farmstead. Pale lightly hazy gold pour with nice sticky white head. Aroma is super fruity, nice and tropical, light grassy notes, nice wet juicy hop aroma. Tastes just moderately bitter, nice juicy flavor, tropical fruit notes. Palate is med-light bodied with med carbonation. Tasty.

BIF project 2. Appearance: slightly clouded burnt orange, thin off-white head, leaves minimal lacing. Aroma: orange juice concentrate, huge sweet bread malt aroma. Some tropical fruit notes. Taste: tropical sweetness, malt sweetness, some citrus rind bitterness, almost getting some cinnamon spice or something similar. Palate: harsh carbonation, dry, astringent. Really really good beer... Been waiting to try this for a couple years. A little disappointed.

Keg at CBC Clerkenwell. Deep Amber, slightly hazy. Lovely little white head on top. Tropical fruit, pine, baker’s yeast and bubblegum aroma with an unfortunate but ultimately forgivable plastic note. Taste starts sweet, then turns slightly bitter. Big and bready with mango, guava, cedar. Cinnamon and spruce in the finish. Full palate, nicely carbonated. Delectable, intelligent and Floridian as fuck. A cut above similar beers and a real treat.

12 oz. can into a tulip. Can dated 10/7/15, 3 weeks old A: 1" tall coarse head lingers for several minutes atop a clear pale orange body. A little lacing in patches. S: Sweet tangerine citrus greets the nose first from the can. A little spruce also. Not much maltiness. T: Crisp sweetness from the malts combine with piney but round bitterness with citrus zest ending the finish. M: Medium body with average carbonation level. Medium length finish is oily. O: Nice complexity of flavors save this from mediocrity IMO. Among the freshest beers I’ve had so this is as good as it gets evidently. I’m not terribly impressed but not my favorite style.

Can thanks to Danny. Pours light golden. Hoppy citrus aromas. Quite bitter and refreshing. Some pine and oranges in after taste. Not as good as I’d have imagined it would be. Nice though.

12oz can. Allentown PA. 15 day old can. Appearance is cloudy orange with a tint of yellow. Very nice white head. Aroma is resinous and citrus. Lemon and orange. Taste is mostly bitter. A subtle sweetness in the finish. Body is full, really well done. Long finish. Surprisingly, the thing I like least about this beer is the aroma. I find it pretty average, but everything else is really well done. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
