Commercial Description:
Jai Alai India Pale Ale pays tribute to the original extreme sport. Jai Alai, a game native to the Basque region of Spain, is played on a court called a fronton. Jai Alai players attempt to catch a ball using a curved mitt, whilst the ball travels at speeds of up to 188 miles per hour! Proving they have a sense of humor the Spanish dub this game, with its ball traveling at race car speeds, """"the merry game."""" Tampa was once home to a busy Jai Alai fronton but sadly all that remains of Jai Alai in the Tampa Bay area is this India Pale Ale that we brew in tribute to the merry game. The India Pale Ale style of beer has its roots in the strong ales sent from England to thirsty British troops in India during the 18th century. To survive the journey the beers needed more alcohol and more hops (which act as a natural preservative). This “big” brewing practice made India Pale Ale one of the first """"extreme beers"""" and a favorite among the Queens military men in India. Eventually it became a favorite style of the new crop of American brewers seeking more flavor and complexity than mass-market brewers were willing to offer.

Growler from Big Z Beverage. Pours a deep orange/brown with a small white head. Aroma of citrus, caramel malt, and grassy hops. Flavor is malt-forward with grassy hops and crystal malt character. Not very hoppy which was a disappointment to me. I am rather underwhelmed, especially since I enjoyed the cedar aged version so much. 7/4/7/4/15 [3.7/5]

Sampled at the brewery on October 2, 2009. A dark golden hue with a flowery hop nose with an off white head and nice lacing. Initial sensation of taste is a light malt followed by powerful spice and sweet hops. This IPA is full bodied but not overwhelming. Slight bitterness at the end A nice IPA.

Sample at Treasure Coast. Really nice IPA here. A floral presence is all over the beer which gives a soothing gentle quality to the beer, which is still rather robust. The hops provide a nice powerful backbone, but gently and gracefully slow themselves and are restrained by a humming malty pine. Very nicely done

Thanks to Skyview for sharing. I liked this, but I don’t have a lot of say about it. Medium bitter hops and lightly sweet malt. The hops are not as powerful as I might like, but the flavor is good. Palate is a little thin for the cost of the beer, but this is a better than average ipa.

GABF 2009, deep golden pour. 1st beer of Saturday afternoon event. Decent hopfilled nose, leafy. Taste was decent bitterness but not great. Possibly the victim of heighten expectations but average IPA IMO

GABF 2009, day 3: Very rich malts were filled with bread and toast. Intense hop aromas and bitterness. Very spicy and flowery hops. Bold yet balanced. Solid IPA.

GABF. Pours amber golden with a white head. Leafy hop aroma. Flavor of pale malts countered by a spicy and herbal hop bitterness. Not bad, but definitely in the middle of the pack for my picky IPA palate.

9/26/09 notes: poured at GABF. This was my first delve into the ridiculously hyped Cigar City. My initial take: pretty good, nice use of subtle and unusual flavors, but overall underwhelming. Jai Alai has an herbal, spicy hop aroma, and pours sort of a orange-gold-brown color. Flavor has that herbal hop flavor that is more suggestive of East Coast style IPAs than West. Towards the finish a pleasant spiciness develops, which rolls into the bitter finish. Quite interesting, but I am spoiled (and sold) on the zippiness of west coast IPAs.
