Jai Alai India Pale Ale pays tribute to the original extreme sport. Jai Alai, a game native to the Basque region of Spain, is played on a court called a fronton. Jai Alai players attempt to catch a ball using a curved mitt, whilst the ball travels at speeds of up to 188 miles per hour! Proving they have a sense of humor the Spanish dub this game, with its ball traveling at race car speeds, """"the merry game."""" Tampa was once home to a busy Jai Alai fronton but sadly all that remains of Jai Alai in the Tampa Bay area is this India Pale Ale that we brew in tribute to the merry game. The India Pale Ale style of beer has its roots in the strong ales sent from England to thirsty British troops in India during the 18th century. To survive the journey the beers needed more alcohol and more hops (which act as a natural preservative). This “big” brewing practice made India Pale Ale one of the first """"extreme beers"""" and a favorite among the Queens military men in India. Eventually it became a favorite style of the new crop of American brewers seeking more flavor and complexity than mass-market brewers were willing to offer.

19-MAR-2011, bottle @home, from "Whole Foods Orlando". Orange/amber with off-white quite high head. Lovely fruity nose with a bitter twist. Taste is more fruitiness with especially grape fruit... ...and then the bitterness kicks in. Moutdrying almost hurting bitterness, and it just goes on with a very full and creamy texture. Lovely IPÅ. Really one of the best. Not just bitter but also very complex.

Clear red-gold pour with a dense head that fades to good lace. Malty aroma, with some resinous pine and citrus. A little sweet, tropical fruit backed by bracing bitterness.

UPDATED: MAY 20, 2011 Florida IPA. Citrus and tropical flavors that reminds me of kumquats and oranges, but it has a spicy hop profile too. A variety of hops for sure. It is also very malty and thick. Jai Alai is one of a kind for sure, a must try.

Bottle. Dark red orange, thick orange tinted head that literally coats the glass in lace. Aroma is a complexity of hops: some pine, some citrus, some tropical fruits, and a definite bubblegum note. Really cool! Hearty sweet toffee malt stands behind a hop onslaught, with blood orange, ripe melon, pine, and mango flavours. More complex than your average IPA, fantastic.

12 oz. bottle, sent by FuckSociety (thanks Sebastian), pours copper with a white head. Citrus and pine hops on the nose, with floral notes and fruity esters. Wonderful flavour of rich piney hops, with secondary elements of floral notes and light fruit. Orange peel, citrus and pine on the finish. Delicious IPA.

Poured from a bottle at House of Brews. Deep amber color, more color than I am used to for an IPA. Large frothy head, left some cool rings of lace as it settled. Aroma is of floral hops. Flavor is very hop forward, just enough sweet malt to balance it. Hop flavors lean towards resin and pine, with some citrus developing on the finish. Finish is also bitter and long, with hops lingering around forever. My kind of IPA. Nice.

Bottle. Poured orange with a creamy off-white head that settled to a ring and left light lacing. Huge citrus hop aroma. The flavor found citrus and floral hops with a caramel background. Medium body and medium bitterness.

Pour is a darker shade of brown for an IPA. Nose is light on the hops for an IPA. Taste is a bit maltier than that of the average IPA. Though lacking a bit in the hops, still a good tasting and refreshing beer.

Bottle from Florida. Pours dark brown with small head that retains. I would love to try this on tap or perhaps fresher than the bottle we obtained. Tasted a little stale but still quite good. I would like to try the cedar aged version.

12oz bottle, thanks to Julie and Mike for bringing it back from Tampa. Pours a dark clean amber with no head and light white lacing and light carbonation. Nice nose of hops and slightly floral. Very smooth and creamy, nicely balanced bitterness, the finish isn’t overly complex but the hops and bitterness linger and leave a great taste everywhere. Wish i could get this on a regular basis.
