Jai Alai India Pale Ale pays tribute to the original extreme sport. Jai Alai, a game native to the Basque region of Spain, is played on a court called a fronton. Jai Alai players attempt to catch a ball using a curved mitt, whilst the ball travels at speeds of up to 188 miles per hour! Proving they have a sense of humor the Spanish dub this game, with its ball traveling at race car speeds, """"the merry game."""" Tampa was once home to a busy Jai Alai fronton but sadly all that remains of Jai Alai in the Tampa Bay area is this India Pale Ale that we brew in tribute to the merry game. The India Pale Ale style of beer has its roots in the strong ales sent from England to thirsty British troops in India during the 18th century. To survive the journey the beers needed more alcohol and more hops (which act as a natural preservative). This “big” brewing practice made India Pale Ale one of the first """"extreme beers"""" and a favorite among the Queens military men in India. Eventually it became a favorite style of the new crop of American brewers seeking more flavor and complexity than mass-market brewers were willing to offer.

Bottle from Kris Wines. Colour is rusty amber, white head. Nose is orange blossom, tangerine, caramel, quite sweet. Taste initially menthol and pine bitter, nettles, then sweetness, almost sweet like a double IPA, lots of caramel and orange. Little musky and musty so not sure this is as fresh as it should be. Not as fresh citrous fruit bitter as I would expect. Not as fresh hoppy as I would expect.

Pours a hazy gold with a substancial white head. Citrus aroma dominates with some subtle malt notes. Grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, and malt flavors. High carbonation with a medium body. Finishes fairly dry. Very good IPA.

12oz bottle, pours a slightly cloudy gold, thin white head. Hoppy aroma of pine, tropical fruit, and caramel. Similar pine and tropical fruit flavors. Nice bitter finish. Delicious

A nice clear copper body with a white head that had great retention and nice lace. Aroma had caramel malts, both grapefruit and pine hops. Flavor had a nice sweet malt note, and the hops were nice and bitter, but not to the point of over powering the nice malt flavors. Nice and easy to drink went down easy, maybe too easy. Somewhat dry in the finish.

UPDATED: SEP 30, 2016 4/4/2012 33cl Bottle from De Bierkoning. Slightly hazy golden orange colour, dense white head. Aroma of musty grapefruit, weed, dung, a bit mouldy, not very vibrant. Flavour is again musty grapefruit, light malt backbone, firm bitterness with grass and tea, fruity bitter mango and grapefruit finish. Medium bodied, slightly alcoholic. The aroma reminded me of an infected beer I had once from ’t Koelschip. Maybe this bottle didn’t travel well, I had high expectations and was willing to pay 5 euro’s for a bottle, but was seriously underwhelmed. 647313 Re-rate On tap at Borefts ’16. Much fresher, lots of grapefruit and weed, some pine, good IPA.

355 ml bottle. From brewdog.com.
Hazy orange amber colour with big fluffy off-white head. Mildish fruity aroma with touch of hops and caramel. Flavour is bitterish fruity with lots of alcohol and some maltiness. Far from fresh. But it should be quite fresh since it says JUL2511 and I guess that’s bottling date. Alcohol is getting stronger all the time. Hoppiness is rather subdued somehow. Still quite smooth.

Very interesting beer. Very fruity in the nose. Pours a wonderful golden amber with a decent amount of head and lacing. To its both sweet and bitter which is odd, but I like it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
