Jai Alai India Pale Ale pays tribute to the original extreme sport. Jai Alai, a game native to the Basque region of Spain, is played on a court called a fronton. Jai Alai players attempt to catch a ball using a curved mitt, whilst the ball travels at speeds of up to 188 miles per hour! Proving they have a sense of humor the Spanish dub this game, with its ball traveling at race car speeds, """"the merry game."""" Tampa was once home to a busy Jai Alai fronton but sadly all that remains of Jai Alai in the Tampa Bay area is this India Pale Ale that we brew in tribute to the merry game. The India Pale Ale style of beer has its roots in the strong ales sent from England to thirsty British troops in India during the 18th century. To survive the journey the beers needed more alcohol and more hops (which act as a natural preservative). This “big” brewing practice made India Pale Ale one of the first """"extreme beers"""" and a favorite among the Queens military men in India. Eventually it became a favorite style of the new crop of American brewers seeking more flavor and complexity than mass-market brewers were willing to offer.

Bottled poured into dimpled mug. Nice burnt orange color with brown tones. Small head dissipates fairly quickly but leaves a thin foam layer on top that thickens around the perimeter. Aroma is nice and complex with notes of citrus hops, pineapple, booze, and maybe slight hints of wood and bready dough. Beer is a tad oily on the palate, pretty full bodied. Nice flavor that starts with a great burst of caramel malt, followed by well balanced dose of floral/resin hops and then ends with a sticky citrus sweetness. An outstanding, well balanced IPA....and I’ve had it in the cellar for close to 6 months. Was probably even better back when I bought it. Well-done, Cigar City!

Oustanding. Citrus flavors were truly awesome. Bitterness was present but not overwhelming. Very balanced. Palate was thick and the flavors lingered for quite a while. Wish it were easier to get ahold of this stuff in my fair State (Alabama).

Hazy golden tangerine pour with a 1/2 inch eggshell head that left a nice amount of webbing. Aroma is extremely tropical with mango, papaya, and freshly picked Florida oranges (I know...not exactly tropical). Flavor is similar with tons of citrus and tropical fruit along with a nice caramel presence to balance the bitter hops. Medium mouthfeel...with the alcohol being nearly invisible. Wish we had this on the shelf.

12 oz bottle given to me by beastiefan2k. Pour is a slight hazed burnt orange copper with a well formed 3 inch light tan head. Thick coating lacing left behind as the head goes down. Aroma is caramel toasted malt along with a fresh resin citrus orange. There is citrus peel present as well, nice balanced nose. Taste is the nose, nice balance between toasted nutty sweet caramel and the orange citrus, resin grassy hops. The finish is dry with some additional grass and mineral. The balance of the taste is actually more towards the malt, which gives it a nice body. Palate is medium bodied, normal carbonation levels and the dry finish. Nice IPA, thanks for bringing this back for me Eugene.

Bottle. Sweet aroma with good balance of citrus and pine. Cloudy orange with a big white head. Very malty, biscuit and toast, with earthy pine hops. Good bitterness, firm but smooth.

I wasn’t crazy about this. It pours a pretty dark amber with a good-sized white head. The nose is perhaps what turns me off most. Kind of musty and earthy, with a bit of pine apparent. Just strange. I like mustiness and barnyard in a good saison, but it’s not appealing in an IPA. The flavor is also piney and perhaps a bit vegetal. I drank this next to the Oskar Blues Gubna IIPA and the Mikkeller-BrewDog I Hardcore You IIPA, and it was definitely the loser of the bunch. Not bad, but not something I’d go out of my way to obtain.

Candy bubble gum with parts of spice show well with this nicely hopped IPA. Pours deep amber and drops a nice citrus and spice nuance on the sweet finish.

Pine bubble gum with a woody coating in a wet-dry texture followed by a rather Earthy citrus aroma. Nicely done! The pine does overtake the citrus a bit.

Draught at Mikkeller Bar. Cloudy orange coloured with a medium sized off-white head. Fruity aroma of hops and pine needles with notes of citrus. Fruity flavour of hops, pine needles and grape fruits. Dry hoppy finish.
