Jai Alai India Pale Ale pays tribute to the original extreme sport. Jai Alai, a game native to the Basque region of Spain, is played on a court called a fronton. Jai Alai players attempt to catch a ball using a curved mitt, whilst the ball travels at speeds of up to 188 miles per hour! Proving they have a sense of humor the Spanish dub this game, with its ball traveling at race car speeds, """"the merry game."""" Tampa was once home to a busy Jai Alai fronton but sadly all that remains of Jai Alai in the Tampa Bay area is this India Pale Ale that we brew in tribute to the merry game. The India Pale Ale style of beer has its roots in the strong ales sent from England to thirsty British troops in India during the 18th century. To survive the journey the beers needed more alcohol and more hops (which act as a natural preservative). This “big” brewing practice made India Pale Ale one of the first """"extreme beers"""" and a favorite among the Queens military men in India. Eventually it became a favorite style of the new crop of American brewers seeking more flavor and complexity than mass-market brewers were willing to offer.

From notes. First reviewed 6/11/2010. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass. Jai Alai pours a copper tangerine color, with a modest, bubbly white head. Some lace forms a nice web on the glass. A great variety of citrus hop aromas. Grapefruit, mango, and sweet pineapple. A soft, caramel bready malt exists in the background. The balance between a semi-sweet bready malt and the stronger citrusy hops stays steady throughout each sip. Sweet mango and pineapple help round out the dominating tart grapefruit hop presence. Quite a hoppy bitterness in the middle, but it finishes a little sweet. Jai Alai is the definition of a smooth and creamy feel for an IPA. The great feel is what really sets this apart. Crisp and bold, with a light dry finish. A light sticky residue remains at the end of the sip. This is very tasty, and the creamy feel puts it up there as one of the more drinkable IPA’s I have had.

Dr. Owl-Land sent me this prescription, thank you Dr. for sending me a bottle of this elixir.

The beer pours a very hazy light orange and holds a medium tight white head for a good long while, leaving spotty lacing on the glass.

The aroma is nice enough from the get go, grassy with some resin and some sweet/toasty malt. Some citrus comes thorough but that’s pretty limited, as the beer warms the booziness in the aroma starts to show up and sort of crescendos to the point of almost unpleasant by the end of the glass.

The flavor is very nice, spicy up front with a good showing of piney hops. Eventually the fruit forward hops become more dominant giving the beer a nice citrusy flavor. Plenty of toasty malt shines through but the beer remains relatively dry & the alcohol so prevalent in the aroma is no where to be found in the flavor.

Very enjoyable beer. Thanks Danny!

On keg at the Craft Beer Co. Pours a slightly cloudy golden colour with a thin white head. Lovely hoppy aroma of pine, passion fruit, peach and caramel. Similar pine, peach and pineapple flavours. Nice and bitter with moderate carbonation and an oily mouth-feel. Alcohol is fairly present also. Delicious!

Orange colour with a fragmented head. More malts than hops in the aroma: biscuits, toast and orange, mandarin. Sweet for an american IPA, but still balanced and VERY tasty with a long and mild bitter finish. One of the best (non aggressive) IPA’s I’ve tasted.

Bottle/12oz - Pours a hazy orange amber in color with a small whitish head that faded quickly, but produced some minor lacing on the glass. Aroma is a balanced mix of hops... pine and floral... and caramel malts. Flavor follows pretty closely... very well balanced... medium bitter. Finish is lingering bitterness and slightly sweet at the very end. Really good!
