COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Jai Alai India Pale Ale pays tribute to the original extreme sport. Jai Alai, a game native to the Basque region of Spain, is played on a court called a fronton. Jai Alai players attempt to catch a ball using a curved mitt, whilst the ball travels at speeds of up to 188 miles per hour! Proving they have a sense of humor the Spanish dub this game, with its ball traveling at race car speeds, """"the merry game."""" Tampa was once home to a busy Jai Alai fronton but sadly all that remains of Jai Alai in the Tampa Bay area is this India Pale Ale that we brew in tribute to the merry game. The India Pale Ale style of beer has its roots in the strong ales sent from England to thirsty British troops in India during the 18th century. To survive the journey the beers needed more alcohol and more hops (which act as a natural preservative). This “big” brewing practice made India Pale Ale one of the first """"extreme beers"""" and a favorite among the Queens military men in India. Eventually it became a favorite style of the new crop of American brewers seeking more flavor and complexity than mass-market brewers were willing to offer.

Strong citrus flavor, perhaps tangerines. Not overly hopped. Excellent balance of flavors doesn't kill the taste buds. Tastes great right out of the can ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Can, bought in Florida. Sweet tropical fruit and citrus aroma with notes of floral hops. Pours cloudy golden colored with a large, soapy off white head with excellent retention but not a lot of lacing. Starts with sweet tropical fruit flavors with some grapefruit citrus as well. Finishes very smooth with the tropical fruit and citrus hops as well as just a touch of floral hops as well. So smooth, it could as easily not be an IPA.

Smell: loads of tropical fruit & citrus, floral hops. Taste: silky mouth feel, juicy sweet citrus, caramel. Finish: Grapefruit, lemon oil, orange zest, resiny dryness. (canned 02/24/16, tasted 05/03/16)

2015 BJCP Category: 21A American IPA

AROMA: Strong hoppy aroma; equal parts tropical fruit juice and dank resin. Some grass. No distinct malt aroma. 11/12

APPEARANCE: Burnt amber/flame orange. Quite hazy but visible CO2. Two-finger, off-white froth. Plenty of lace. 3/3

FLAVOR: Plenty of hops throughout. Tropical fruit to start with pine and resin on finish. Bitterness is dank throughout with a dryness on the end. Malt base imparts slight sweetness in the form of orange marmalade. Delectable all around and a textbook example of the style. 18/20

MOUTHFEEL: Though potent at 7.5% ABV, body is only medium with a consistent crispness. Hops linger with slight dryness but is not harsh. Alcohol is virtually undetectable. Smooth and quaffable (but not refreshing). 5/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: Pretty much a perfect IPA in every way. That it’s so consistent after many years of production and on such a large scale is amazing. 9/10

TOTAL SCORE: 46/50

Pours copper in color with subtle nose of citrus. Flavor has upfront citrus bitterness with citrus (mango) and tropical fruit hop notes in the finish. While many IPA’s are on the sweet side, this one does a nice job of blending the sweet/bitter scales.

Tall pint draft pour on the roof top of Zamora. Apparently this is the beer that is everywhere around town, and if you are a newcomer like me, and not sick of it yet, it’s pretty damn good. Dense orange pour with an active fizz head. Fresh hops aroma. Flavor is hop heavy right out of the gate, with hops, and a hint of hops. Hoppy too. And some hops. Seriously. Tropical fruit hints in there. Pretty good, and actually reminds me a lot of an IPA back home. Cool beer here.

Pours a slightly hazy gold with thick just off-white head. Head has tons of lacing. Aroma is full of citrus and some resin. Taste is biased towards resin side. Fantastic IPA.

Cigar City's Jai Alai is a very basic IPA. Slightest Hop Aroma is present and hop taste is nothing special.

Leafy, green, and fresh hop aroma right out of the can. Pours a slightly hazy amber with a full white head. Lots of tropical fruit and citrus notes come through, with enough malt there to just bring everything together, before it fades off into a bitter finish. Moderate body, with that long bitter finish to help out. This is an amazing IPA.
