Jai Alai India Pale Ale pays tribute to the original extreme sport. Jai Alai, a game native to the Basque region of Spain, is played on a court called a fronton. Jai Alai players attempt to catch a ball using a curved mitt, whilst the ball travels at speeds of up to 188 miles per hour! Proving they have a sense of humor the Spanish dub this game, with its ball traveling at race car speeds, """"the merry game."""" Tampa was once home to a busy Jai Alai fronton but sadly all that remains of Jai Alai in the Tampa Bay area is this India Pale Ale that we brew in tribute to the merry game. The India Pale Ale style of beer has its roots in the strong ales sent from England to thirsty British troops in India during the 18th century. To survive the journey the beers needed more alcohol and more hops (which act as a natural preservative). This “big” brewing practice made India Pale Ale one of the first """"extreme beers"""" and a favorite among the Queens military men in India. Eventually it became a favorite style of the new crop of American brewers seeking more flavor and complexity than mass-market brewers were willing to offer.

This has a classic strong IPA taste, with very little aftertaste. It’s good, but doesn’t stand out in any particular way.

Pours out golden with a thin whit head, beckoning your mouth come closer. Notes of citrus and pine follow. Taste follows the nose but adds a bit of hop spiciness and a bit of onion.

355 ml can from Systembolaget. Bronze pour with some head. Nose is a bit weak but I do get some apricot and peaches. Medium bitterness with some exotic fruits in the taste. Finishes a bit sweet. This one might have been a bit tired...

Very similar to Sucks. Slightly less citrusy aroma, but otherwise very good. Wish it had CA distribution!

Can thanks to respertFTW. Huge citrus, pine and tropical fruit aromas as soon as I cracked the can. Deep orange with a light beige head. Smooth and balanced. Pretty amazing.

This beer is a perfect example of the style. A great IPA, with citrusy notes, grapefruit mostly, a little lemon as well. A hint of pine comes through, and the great part is that there is just a tiny bit of malt on the finish for this hop bomb.

From a can that’s 1 month and 1 day old. Gorgeous amber color, sweet malt and tropical hops in the smell and taste. Goes down really easy and smooth for 7.5 abv.

served in pint glass; some dark sediment in bottle added with last few drops. pours a slightly hazy amber with a thick off-white head. Head leaves good lacing. Small amount of pale sediment (added during tasting). S - both hops and malt evident. Hops smell fresh and dominant the aroma. Primarily citrus-toned with a hint of melon. T - immediate and lasting hop hit, with a nice amount of malt sweetness to add complexity and reduce the bitterness, particularly in the after-taste. Finish is noteworthy, with a drawn-out and dynamic flavor array. M - typical for style, if a bit more biting and clean. Nice level of carbonation. {from 2010 notes}

First time getting to try a Cigar City offering and I wasn’t disappointed. This was a throw in from a trade, so I was happy! Nose was nice floral and citrus hops. Poured a cloudy orange and left some lacing. Taste was very strong on orange. Very well done IPA.

Drank from a can poolside in FL. Nice citrus aroma. Bitter almost resinous finish. Crisp and refreshing. Decent IPA in a place where they are hard to find. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Predominantly malty aroma, some of caramelized malt type aroma. Some hop aroma, but it is the piney resinous hoppy. Taste is full flavored malty, bitter finish. Tasty balanced full flavored ipa, but was expecting citrus /grapefruit hops from what I read on this one and I do not get much of that. Also more in line with a double ipa. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
