Jai Alai India Pale Ale pays tribute to the original extreme sport. Jai Alai, a game native to the Basque region of Spain, is played on a court called a fronton. Jai Alai players attempt to catch a ball using a curved mitt, whilst the ball travels at speeds of up to 188 miles per hour! Proving they have a sense of humor the Spanish dub this game, with its ball traveling at race car speeds, """"the merry game."""" Tampa was once home to a busy Jai Alai fronton but sadly all that remains of Jai Alai in the Tampa Bay area is this India Pale Ale that we brew in tribute to the merry game. The India Pale Ale style of beer has its roots in the strong ales sent from England to thirsty British troops in India during the 18th century. To survive the journey the beers needed more alcohol and more hops (which act as a natural preservative). This ďbigĒ brewing practice made India Pale Ale one of the first """"extreme beers"""" and a favorite among the Queens military men in India. Eventually it became a favorite style of the new crop of American brewers seeking more flavor and complexity than mass-market brewers were willing to offer.

This is a solid pale ale with the appearance of hazy dark gold with a 1 finger white head. Aroma was incredible which hits you up front with orange zest and lemon followed by some buttering hops. Taste is a little more mellow on the orange zest and hits you more in the middle with lemon and grapefruit. On the finish you get a nice bitterness which lingers. Mouthfeel is nice and smooth with soft carbonation. Wish I could get this regularly.

COD 1/2/16. Pours a clear orange/amber. World class head volume, lacing and retention. Quite outstanding nose of orange, mango, pear, passion fruit and light biscuit. As it warms, subtle notes of tangerine and pine emerge. Heavy light body with a smooth texture. Superb carbonation with an effervescent middle and a prickly finish. The flavor profile is quite outstanding and had it been a bit more intense, it would be world class. The flavor is quite complex, perfectly balanced and mildly bitter. It begins with the flavors of the nose in blended fashion, citric at first (tangerine, orange) then flowing to the sweeter tropical aspects. The middle is very mildly bittered for the style and the resultant sweetness shines at this juncture through the finish. Here is where mango, pear and passion fruit take center stage over a soft bready biscuit with rich caramel notes. The finish just hints at dryness and leaves you with a slightly sweet fade of tropical hop flavor. Take your time with this one. The closer it gets to room temperature, the more intense the flavor becomes. Consequently, Iím scoring this world class in flavor.

50 ml sample from a can. Hazy amber. Heavy on piney and citrusy hops, subdued fruity malts. Strong piney and grassy bitter finish. Very good. (Backlog 17-JAN-2016).

This is the best beer i have ever had. Pours a pretty golden caramel color with a nice fluffy head. The head stick with the beer untul the last sip. Tastes hoppy with a lot of citrus. Has a delicious bitter aftertaste that will have you craving another pint. I highly recommend finding Jai Alai on tap if you are in Tampa. Otherwise a can will work just fine. I find that a lot of the great IPAs out there are tough to drink beyond one or two, but i end up drinking the whole sixer with Jai Alai. Cheers.

Jai Alai is a uniquely robust IPA in that it's got the typical piney scent and taste, but it feels so full bodied that I feel like I'm drinking a heavier beer than I am. It's smooth yet it's somewhat overpowering. It's a very good beer.
