3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Had this one, 2011 bottle, at The Porter Bar in Atlanta on 11/23/14. I was pretty excited to get to try this. Pours black just like regular Jose Marti with a fluffy khaki head on top that sits around for a good bit. Lots of oak on the nose, light plastic smells, a bit strange, some weird spiciness, something almost like pine. Flavor follows with some faint chocolate tones, and a massive spicy oak flavor that just envelopes the entire palate, and not really in a good way. Very harsh here, and this thing is 3 years old. Medium bodied, maybe even on the thinner side, with medium carbonation. This was certainly a disappointment, but nonetheless very happy I got a chance to try it. Just too much wood here.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
On draft at CCB. Poured into tulip glass. Nice woody aroma with hints of roastiness. Flavor is dominated by the pungent oak. It hits you before any of the porter does and doesn't subside. It's not just a straight forward wood flavor either, carrying with it some sweetness and booziness. Unfortunately, The Jose Marti, which is an excellent base porter, is sort of marginalized against this heavy wood. With such a good beer to start with, I would have preferred a more subtle application of wood. Still a quite interesting beer, however.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle acquired via trade with Homer321! Dark mahogany pour with chestnut highlights and a large latte head. Loads of very lactic milk chocolate, hint of molasses, oak, vanilla, and chalk. Almost powdery. Really interesting, but perhaps not intended. Seemed a little off the more I got into the bottle and as it warmed. Still not offensive in any way and very glad to have had the opportunity to try it!

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
750mL thanks to scotchzi at RBWG Grand Tasting. Pours clear brown with erupting foam, overcarbonated. Thick, semi rocky head retention. Nose is dusty, cocoa powder, vanilla, steak, lemon soap. Taste is dusty, dirty, earthy, sugary. Palate is very aerated, possibly infected. Papery and dry finish. Strange, but glad to have tried it.
