3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: AUG 20, 2011 Draft… Pitch black ale with a small, creamy, off-white head. What’s not to like about the aroma? I’m getting a really nice, deeply roasted herbal component along with dark chocolate and Cuban espresso notes. Full-bodied with a silky mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Leans slightly toward the bitter side of balance. Big-time mocha, burnt malts and grapefruit rind. Finishes bittersweet, charred and tannic.

Pours dark brown with creamy tan head. Roasted malt and chocolate aromas with some citrus and pine hops. Roasted malt flavor with some sweet milk chocolate and bitter hoppiness. Medium to full body with moderate caarbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. A great hoppy porter.

Tap at the brewery. Deep brown pour with a thick creamy off white head. Big roasted grain, coffee and hops aroma. Thick creamy body, with lots of roasted grain, coffee and even some toffee notes in the taste. Nice hop bitterness popping through in the finish. Really nice.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tap @ Cigar City... Poured deep, dark, reddish/brown with amber highlights and a tan head. Cocoa, chocolate, a little smoke and roast. Dry palate, which created a short finish and quite a bit of hop backing.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: SEP 24, 2010 Bottle. Pours near black with a dense tan head. Very interesting brew. Nose is grassy and citric with some big roasted chocolate malt notes. Medium to full body with good carbonation and a sticky mouth feel. This beer really pushes the limits of a porter, the hops dominate imparting grapefruit, lemon, grass, and pine notes, but there is also a good presence of roasted chocolate malt notes. Good amount of bitterness, I might call this a black IPA if it weren’t for the chocolate but I definitely would say it is aggressive and robust. Finishes with lasting bitterness. I had both draft and bottle versions and thought both were excellent.

Pours a murky rich dark brown. Nose is huge roast and earthy hops. Hints of citrus and pine, sweet malts, smoke, ash. Flavor is a rich robust roast, hints of coffee, earthiness, sweet malts, mild vanilla and rich cocoa. One hell of a porter. Easily one of my favorite CCB beers.
