3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 KickInChalice (771) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAY 8, 2012
Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip.
In my tulip, José Martí has a rich, deep chocolate appearance. Thick and viscous, it is visibly apparent that this is a bold porter. A robust tan mocha head lasts for the duration of the sip, leaving layers of lace down the glass.
The aroma has two separate parts. A blend of full of dark chocolate, roasted malt, and creamy coffee comes through nicely, and pine, orange citrus, and spicy hops provide a strong and interesting counter.
From the first sip I can tell this is a winner. The hops actually shine through up front, at least partially due to their outsized strength. Orange, tangerine, and a bit of grapefruit provide juicy citrus notes, with some spicy pine adding support. The main component of the flavor, however, is the dark chocolate and roasted malt component. Bits of coffee and cream, smoke, and tobacco work in as well, but ultimately the dark chocolate flavor really carries the beer. The finish does have a nice, lingering bitterness, which seems to come from the hops and from the coffee and roast grain flavors.
The body is definitely on the full side for the style, but it never drags with a hop presence that really cuts through the flavor and keeps it fresh. It has a smooth, easy going carbonation that is more creamy than anything.
Other hoppy porters have not really impressed me that much, but this is top notch. I would definitely drink this again.

What a delicious porter. Every sip I did the mmmm afterwards. Shared with a friend in a lineup of four other CC offerings and some Terrapin. This was beer of the night hands down.
---some day, I hope to have tried them all.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 BlackIPA (326) - Rochester, New York, USA - APR 27, 2012
Bottle from smith4498. So I had the french oak version of this thanks to dasilky1 and really was quite impressed. Now, by chance (and the kindness of Jason), I get to try the regular version. Pours a pretty sturdy black with a tan head. Aroma consists of chocolate roastiness, candy and floral hops. Taste reveals a complex web of roast, back room deals going down under a cloud of cigar smoke and tulips in bloom. Earthy, smoky, deep. This is every bit as good as advertised.
