750 ml bottle courtesy of CraftBeerDesign (thanks Geoff!) poured a clear dark reddish brown with a small lingering brown head. Aromas of bitter chocolate, prune, roasted malt and licorice. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth. Flavors of bitter chocolate, roasted malt, dried fruit and light licorice with a smooth lingering roasty dried fruit finish.

Bottle via trade. Pours black/dark brown with a nice tan head. Aroma is of burnt chocolate, dried fruits, lightly tart sugary notes and an ever so slight note of alcohol. Taste is chocolate, liquor soaked plums, tobacco, light vanilla beans, lots of raisin, warming alcohol and some more earthy notes. Grows on you as it warms.

Appearance: Deep dark blackish browns under a tan head which fades into a thin collar. Swirls deep, dark, and decadent with a thick creamy tan collar. Spots of lace.
Nose: Chocolate brownies and chocolate cake. Chocolate covered prunes and dates. Hint of rich earthen red wines along the sides – Bordeaux, zinfandel, shiraz – lightly spiced and lightly smoky. Tickle of tannins in the back – fruit skins, leather, wood.
Palate: Rich creamy meaty decadent mouthfeel. Chocolate covered dried cherries and prunes. Bitter acrid finish teases and tantalizes, bringing me back for more. Leather and burning tobacco leaf in the breath. Spice and earth and more tobacco leaf weave in and out. Mouthfeel, texture, and weight are perfect – heavy but not too heavy, full but not too full – all encompassing. Café mocha.
Final Thoughts: I loved this interpretation of a Baltic Porter from Cigar City Brewing out of Tampa, Florida. I almost missed this beer and I’m glad I did not. Delicious! Hopefully Cigar City will see fit to brew this beer again next year – a new seasonal maybe?
