Bottle for rating #4500: Deep dark dirty caramel, large foamy beige head, nice lacing. Big malty nose, rich caramel, subtle brandy and barrel aging. Also getting a little dark pitted fruit and candied apples as it warms. Sweet malty start, very warming but not alcoholic or burning. I am amazed for a 13.5% beer. Brandy notes and subtle candied apple or citrus peel on the tongue. Now its getting to be a bit warmer. Not as complex as I would have thought, but its still solid. Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full. This is a big thick English like Barley Wine with a Brandy/Cognac like flair. Despite being in Apple Brandy Barrels, it appears to have more of a candied citrus peel connection. Regardless, a big and bold Barley Wine.

Bottle at the BA Buffalo bottle share. Pours monogamy amber with a off white head. Nose of caramel, oak, and brandy. This theme continues in the mouth with a gentle amount of bitterness to keep the palate from going stale. The body is full with a great creamy texture. Wow, what a treat.

Big thanks to starrdogg for opening this one. Served in a Cigar City snifter. The nose carries a pretty strong aroma of apple brandy with some nice sweetness coming from that. Malty sweetness with faint fruit and caramel comes behind that. Flavor is a bit too barrel heavy, but still quite nice. A bit of booze, but not too much for a 13.5% beer.

Bottle shared with Vinny, Frank, Alen and Bill. Pours a deep, murky brown body with thin off white head and minor lacing. Aroma is sweet vanilla, caramel, sweet barley & malt, light cocoa, and booze. Mouthfeel is medium and lightly silky. The alcohol suggested in the aroma is nowhere to be found in the taste - making this beer extremely drinkable despite it’s high alcohol content. Notes of vanilla, toffee, caramel, cocoa, apple brandy, oak and a light spice. Very nice.

Brilliant ruby red colour, no head. Aroma of alcohol, nuts, raisins, bourbon, vanilla, red fruits and liquorice. Somewhat sweet flavour, chocolate, cacao, light cloying. Finish chocolate, raisins, vanilla and bourbon.
Really nice beer by CCB. But apple brandy barrels? Could have sworn it was bourbon. There’s nothing wrong with bourbon though.

Sampled at GonzoIllini’s Birthday Party (Western Springs, IL). Happy Birthday, Tony! Pours a richer hazed brownish pour, good haze, with frothy brownish deep hazy pour. Richer tannish head dies to a film, laces ok. Aromas are rich brandy nose, oak and vanillla, gentle oak, spirit, apple fruit. Intial is richer oak, spirit, some carmelization. Some toasty elements, richer apple spirit, oak, vanilla. Some toast, toffee, and vanilla. Middle offers some apple, toffee, spirit. Backend is dryness, taninns. Gentle apple, oak. Finish is oak, gentle heat, firm carmelized and sweeter malt body. Vanilla, oak, the apple element firmly comes in. This wasn’t bad, less dark fruit emphasis than the regular Cognac version, a touch lighter in punch and intensity though. Solid. I probably liked this a bit more, though I’d say the Cognac was a more impressive beer, richer and more complex.

Nearly black, little tan head. Sweet and boozy aroma, bit of toffee. Taste is quite sweet, some brandy/wine-like qualities. Thick with low carbonation. The beer improves as it sit/warms. Big fig and dark fruit flavors appear. Very good beer, would love to try it in a year.

Mahogany pour with a small off-white head. Interesting nose to this. Tons of banana, brandy, and vanilla. A heavy dose of brown sugar, lots of alcohol, some toast, and a bit of wood. The flavor is a bit harsh and boozy. Lots of brandy, some wood, vanilla, and sweet malt. A mild bitterness, some burnt sugar, toffee, and hints of dark fruit. Could use a bit of balance and less alcohol.

Bottle, from James. Church on a Hill in brandy barrels. Poured a murk brown color with off white small head. Medium carbonation. Aroma of caramel, toffee, booze, licorice, anise, and malt. Taste is creamy layers of rich apple brandy, figs, toffee, biscuit, vanilla, and light cocoa. For 13.5 this thing is scary, Drank a couple 3 oz pours or so and felt it creep on me in the body but nothing in the taste. Perfect amount of sweetness in this barley. I enjoyed this one alot, even more so then the barrel aged church on a hill.

Nice brandy hit on this.one. sweet and alcoholic apple melds with the alcoholic barleywine adding caramel malt sweetness.
