This brew pours a dark brownish-amber color with a medium thin light beige head that dissipates quickly to a film. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Boozy nose with notes of malt and dark fruit. Full-bodied with a brandy character and notes of figs, malt and wood. The finish is vinous oak and bready malt, leaving a lingering ripe fruit aftertaste. Good beer overall.

750mL bottle, sent from Elliesbrown (thanks a lot, Zack), pours a deep dark mahogany with a small beige head. Aroma of various deep dark fruits, apple, a bit of brandy and caramel malts. Flavour of rich caramel malts, apple brandy, deep dark fruits and a bit of candied sugar. Very complex, with a very deep flavour profile. Sweetness is medium, with a high complexity from the apple brandy without the barrels ever taking over. Finishes on notes of apple, brandy and caramel malts. Great stuff, but perhaps not as amazing as the ratings suggests.

Bottle... Murky brown ale with a small, white, short-lived head. The bouquet furnishes buttery caramel, toffee and loads of apple brandy. Medium to full-bodied with feather-soft carbonation. The flavor is remarkably well-balanced - caramel, apple brandy, vanilla, oak and an awkward earthy component. Finishes earthy and a touch minerally. I enjoyed the base beer (Church on a Hill) and the Cognac Barrel-aged Church on a Hill much more than this treatment. I gotta go against the grain here, but not by much. Bottle courtesy of burg326!

Drank at thirdeye11’s birthday party. Very excited to try this one. The beer pours a brownish color. The aroma is full of brandy, with some nice caramel and toffee thrown in. The flavor is ridiculously complex. I get a lot of apple and brandy notes, as well as some brown sugar, caramel and alcohol. There is also some oak and a hint of vanilla. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very worthy beer for rating No. 3,500.

Bottle 750ml. @ Tasting by Benzai [ ZZT V ].

Clear dark red brown colour with virtually none head. Aroma is light heavy malty, caramel, chocolate, dark fruit, coconut peel, wood - barrel, alcohol - bourbon. Flavour is heavy sweet and moderate to heavy bitter with a long duration, bourbon - brandy, laber laver, malty, chocolate, wood. Big big flaver - lovely. Body is medium to full, texture is oily, carbonation is flat, finish feel is light to moderate alcoholic. [20121006]

Bottle from Hopscotch, mucho thanks! Pours a muddy medium brown hue with a quickly fading head and spotty lace. Get plenty of apple brandy on the nose with intense fruit, vanilla, oak and booze along with more than a fair share of caramel and toffee, some bready and leathery esters too. The taste is sweet but not overly sweet thanks to the apple twang and boozy nature of the brew. Earthy and displaying that "CCB tobacco overtone" this beer showcases medium dark malts fully. There is a slight minty note as well. The mouth feel is oily but not as sticky as one may expect, lightly (perhaps even under) carbonated. A bit metallic on the finish. Overall I like this beer more than the scores would indicate and would easily try it again if given the chance.

Bottle shared by tom10101, thanks a lot Tommy! Magnificient deep brown with a thin white head that sticks. There is a little alcohol in the aroma which must come from the apple brandy but it is pleasing and a good sign of what is to come. There is also a lot of sweetness in the aroma: brown sugar, caramel... you know the drill. Taste is full of sweets too but never cloying. There is a little alcohol burn but this only reinforce the fine spirit aura that this marvelous brew has. At times I thought this could have been labeled as an Old Ale too. Not sure how I could ever pick a winner from KRE, this, King Henry, MoaS, Cuir 100% BBA (we had them back to back on a quiet afternoon... woot!)... they were all exceptionnal in their own ways!

Bottle (750 ml). Traded by Gillard, huge thanks! Reddish brown with a small off-white head and good lacing. Aroma is delightful with malt, caramel, fruits and strong but not overwhelming apple brandy notes. Taste is sweet and rich but not cloying with malt, caramel, apple brandy and strong fruity notes. Medium to heavy body. Warming alcohol. Like JulienHuxley previously said, it’s quite port-like. This is the best Barley Wine and the best CCB beeer I’ve tasted so far. We drank this one and King Henry back to back and, in my opinion, Leon was way better. Great complexity and balance. A wonderful beer and a great sipper

Bottle. Dark mahogany pour, not quite clear with off white head. Aroma is quite boozy, rich malty notes, old ale, wood, vanilla, calvados. Taste is boozy, rich caramel malt notes, warming alcohol, lightly roasty. Palate is rich and hot, not too sweet, smooth and port-like. Very nice BA barleywine.
