3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Medium yellow-tan head over muddy red-brown beer. Sharpish, rather acidic nose; fruity and alcohol. I smell Bourbon, rather than brandy, though, vanilla included. Sharp flavour, again, but here rather alcohol than acids. Sweetish, if bitterish lined beer. Many chocolate notes (both black as milkchocolate). Faint vanilla, wood, ethanol, sugar. Unspecified dark fruit. More vanilla retronasal; warming up liquorice and plums. Bit burning MF, alcoholheat. Texture is viscous, oily; obviously low carbonation however not flat at all. Rather classical sample of barrel aging. Good, but nowhere spectacular.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
750mL shared at RBWG Grand Tasting. Pours a muddy, reddish mahogany. No real head. Nose is very intense Twizzlers candies, some paper. Taste is quite nice- spices, ginger, baked cherry, toffee. Rich, dense body. Calvados heat is muted, not overpowering, though hard to pinpoint as Calvados. Doesn’t come across as barrel aged except for some gained oxidation in the nose.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
This brew pours a dark brownish-amber color with a medium thin light beige head that dissipates quickly to a film. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Boozy nose with notes of malt and dark fruit. Full-bodied with a brandy character and notes of figs, malt and wood. The finish is vinous oak and bready malt, leaving a lingering ripe fruit aftertaste. Good beer overall.

Bottle with many thanks to a generous Floridian. Pours reddish dark brown with tan brown head ring. Nose and taste of sweet cordial apple brandy, caramel toffee, rum raisin, plum and chocolate covered dark fruits. Elegant velvety full body. Finishes with tinge of warming alcohol.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Thanks to markwise for shipping me this 75cl bottle so that I can share it with 77ships, sebletitje and adamjackson and also with some of the Delirium Hoppy Loft staff (the day after Cigar City head brewer Wayne was here and luckily didn’t have a Leon with him to share as well). The 75cl bottle pours murky amber with a tan head of foam. The aroma offers up rich notes of brown sugar coated prunes and ripe red apples as well as caramel sweetness mixing with booze and Brandy. The taste is rich and deep with brown sugar notes, a pleasing kettle like caramelization, prunes and sweet earthy dates. It then moves into smooth sweet boozy Brandy notes and some barrel character. The whole beer comes together to attain an amazing Barrel Aged English style Barleywine experience. Another terrific sipper for sure. Love it.

75cl courtesy of and split with Ibrew2or3, cheers Dave!

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: OCT 7, 2012 75cl bottle @ ZZT V. Hazy red color, small off-white head. Smell malts, sweetness, barrel aged clearly. Taste malts, lightly alcohol, liquor, wood, barrel aging clearly, but to me the brandy BA is very close to bourbon, though I don’t know whether they’re close, but to me it’s very similar to bourbon. Anyway, it’s good! Full body, medium to full carbonation. Absolutely amazing!

Shared by nulledge during RBWG and during the epic BA barleywine tasting (6/29/13). Amber pour with a small khaki head. Rich toffee in the aroma with caramel, sweet brandy, grapes, and light nuttiness. Rich flavor with plenty of BA, sweet brandy, vanilla, toffee, light nuttiness, and burnt caramel. Tasty!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle for rating #4500: Deep dark dirty caramel, large foamy beige head, nice lacing. Big malty nose, rich caramel, subtle brandy and barrel aging. Also getting a little dark pitted fruit and candied apples as it warms. Sweet malty start, very warming but not alcoholic or burning. I am amazed for a 13.5% beer. Brandy notes and subtle candied apple or citrus peel on the tongue. Now its getting to be a bit warmer. Not as complex as I would have thought, but its still solid. Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full. This is a big thick English like Barley Wine with a Brandy/Cognac like flair. Despite being in Apple Brandy Barrels, it appears to have more of a candied citrus peel connection. Regardless, a big and bold Barley Wine.
